Join the IT team supporting one of Australia’s most advanced automated container terminals.
Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Administrator to maintain and enhance the critical technology infrastructure supporting our 24/7 terminal operations.
Reporting to the IT Operations Manager, you will provide senior-level administration, engineering and operational support across VICT’s production and disaster recovery environments. This hands-on role offers exposure to complex infrastructure, operational technology and major IT projects within a highly available environment.
The Opportunity:
As the Senior Systems Administrator, you will take ownership of the reliability, security, performance and recoverability of VICT’s core infrastructure services.
You will manage a diverse technology environment spanning servers, virtualisation, storage, backup, identity, endpoints and network services. You will also provide senior escalation support for complex incidents, lead infrastructure improvements and provide technical guidance to other members of the IT team.
A key focus of the role will be supporting VICT’s transition from VMware to Hyper-V and Azure Local, while ensuring the continued availability and resilience of the systems supporting our automated terminal operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, administer and continually improve VICT’s server, virtualisation, storage, backup, identity, endpoint and core infrastructure services.
- Maintain the availability and performance of business-critical services within a 24/7 operational workplace.
- Administer Windows Server, Linux, Active Directory, Entra ID, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, certificate services and Microsoft 365.
- Manage VMware infrastructure and contribute to the planned transition to Hyper-V Azure Local.
- Provide senior escalation support for complex incidents and service requests.
- Undertake structured troubleshooting,
root-cause analysis and preventative improvement activities.
- Maintain backup, restoration and disaster recovery capabilities using technologies such as Veeam and Azure Backup.
- Coordinate and participate in disaster recovery testing and document outcomes and improvement actions.
- Manage infrastructure security, vulnerability remediation and patching in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor system health, capacity and performance, identifying and addressing emerging issues before they affect terminal operations.
- Plan and deliver infrastructure upgrades, maintenance and changes using appropriate incident, problem and change-management processes.
- Support network and security technologies, including LAN/WAN, VLANs, Wi-Fi, firewalls, VPNs and remote-access services.
- Support infrastructure dependencies for operational and terminal technologies, including Navis N4, Kalmar and ABB automation platforms, gate systems, CCTV and access control.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, system diagrams, recovery plans, procedures and knowledge articles.
- Participate in the on-call roster and support planned after-hours maintenance, incident response and recovery activities when required.
You’ll bring:
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Networking or a related discipline.
- Strong experience administering complex, highly available infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience with VMware vSphere.
- Experience with Windows and Linux server administration.
- Robust knowledge of Active Directory, Entra ID and Microsoft 365 administration.
- Experience managing Microsoft Azure services, including IaaS and PaaS environments.
- Sound knowledge of network protocols, architecture and security principles.
- Experience with Cisco technologies, ideally including Catalyst, Nexus and ISR switching and routing platforms.
- Knowledge of Zero Trust principles, Network Access Control, security monitoring and reporting.
- Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis and incident-management capabilities.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and communicate effectively with technical and operational stakeholders.
Experience with Azure Local, Azure hybrid infrastructure, operational technology or Industrial IoT environments will be highly regarded.
Working Environment:
Our terminal operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The role requires regular attendance in operational terminal areas and may involve participation in an after-hours support or escalation roster. Planned work may also occasionally take place outside normal business hours.
