O'Brien Boiler Services

Sunshine West

At O’Brien Boiler Services, our In-Field Project Managers take ownership of the entire project lifecycle—from mobilisation and site execution through to commissioning and final handover.

This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced Project Manager who enjoys working in complex industrial environments and takes pride in delivering projects safely, commercially and to a high standard.

You will be based from our Sunshine West facility, with regular travel to customer and project sites throughout metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and occasionally interstate.

The Role

As our Victorian In-Field Project Manager, you will be accountable for the successful end-to-end delivery of assigned boiler, steam, hot-water and industrial energy projects.

You will lead site execution while managing project programs, costs, variations, risks, resources and stakeholder expectations. You will also serve as O’Brien’s principal representative on site, providing clear leadership to employees, subcontractors and suppliers.

Working closely with the National Projects Head and our Engineering, Procurement and Project Support teams, you will translate approved project scopes into safe, practical and commercially successful outcomes.

What You’ll Own

- End-to-end project delivery, from mobilisation through to commissioning, handover and defect close-out.

- On-site leadership of technicians, subcontractors, suppliers and other project resources.

- Project financial performance, including budgets, cost control, forecasting, procurement and variations.

- Project programs, ensuring work is appropriately planned, sequenced and completed to schedule.

- DIFOT outcomes, supporting delivery in full, on time and within the approved scope.

- Safety, quality and compliance across all site activities.

- Compliance with Victorian occupational health and safety requirements, Australian Standards, approved drawings and technical specifications.

- Early identification, escalation and mitigation of safety, delivery, technical and commercial risks.

- Client and stakeholder relationships, including progress reporting, expectation management and issue resolution.

- Coordination with Engineering, Procurement and Project Support to ensure materials, documentation and resources are available when required.

- Accurate project records, including site documentation, progress reports,

variations, commissioning records and handover packs.

- Continuous improvement opportunities that make project delivery safer, simpler and more effective.

What Success Looks Like

- Projects are delivered safely, in full, on time and within budget.

- Site teams understand their responsibilities and are well-led, productive and accountable.

- Clients receive clear, timely and transparent communication.

- Project risks and variations are identified and managed early.

- Commercial outcomes are actively monitored and protected.

- Project controls, site records and handover documentation are accurate and complete.

- Strong working relationships are maintained across customers, employees, subcontractors and suppliers.

Skills and Experience

To succeed in this role, you will ideally bring:

- At least five years’ experience delivering projects in industrial, mechanical, engineering, construction, manufacturing or process environments.

- Demonstrated experience taking accountability for complete project outcomes—not simply coordinating individual tasks.

- Experience leading site-based employees, technicians, subcontractors and suppliers.

- Proven capability in project programming, budgeting, cost control, forecasting and variation management.

- Strong commercial awareness and an ability to balance operational, technical and financial priorities.

- The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, scopes of work and other technical documentation.

- Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder-management skills.

- Confidence representing the business with customers and resolving issues professionally.

- Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety obligations in Victorian industrial and construction environments.

- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make considered decisions under pressure.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Project and the broader Microsoft Office suite.

- AutoCAD experience or the ability to review technical drawings electronically.

- Electrical, instrumentation, controls or PLC knowledge would be advantageous.

Qualifications

The following qualifications and experience will be highly regarded:

- A diploma or degree in Project Management, Engineering, Construction Management or Business.

- A relevant mechanical trade background, such as boilermaking, fabrication, fitting, plumbing or pressure welding.

- Experience delivering boiler, steam, hot-water, combustion, process-heat or mechanical-services projects.

- Experience working within operational manufacturing or industrial facilities.

- A current Victorian Construction Induction Card (White Card).

- A current Australian driver’s licence.

- Willingness and ability to travel throughout Victoria and occasionally interstate.

What We Offer

- Genuine ownership and autonomy over project delivery.

- Exposure to varied and technically interesting industrial projects.

- Support from experienced Engineering, Procurement, Project Support and technical teams.

- Career development opportunities within a growing national business.

- Employee Assistance Program support.

- A team-oriented, high-performing culture where initiative and continuous improvement are encouraged.
