Operational Geotechs specialise in providing practical, site based, geotechnical and backfill engineering services to mine sites across the globe. Our expertise lies in delivering these outcomes by seamlessly integrating our experience and know-how to our clients’ operations, by providing highly engaged, open-minded and team-oriented engineers.

We operate from Australia, Canada and the USA and have an expanding global footprint. Our team currently consists of 25 geotechnical engineers, 3 backfill engineers and 6 geotechnicians working on various sites across the world.

The Opportunity

We have several roles for experienced engineers across Australia, Canada and the USA assisting clients with onsite engineering requirements for both underground and open pit operations.



These roles are ideally suited to engineers with several years of operational experience who are looking to broaden their exposure, take on increased technical responsibility, and work closely with operating mines.

You will work alongside senior specialists while also operating independently on defined scopes, providing trusted pragmatic solutions to mining operations.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on your background and project needs, responsibilities may include:

· Geotechnical and backfill engineering secondment opportunities, providing onsite support to our clients.

· Design and stability assessment of underground stopes, pillars, excavations, surface slopes and underground mine infrastructure.

· Ground support design, review, and QA/QC.

· Backfill system support, analysis, and optimisation (paste, CRF, hydraulic fill, etc.)

· Backfill design, review and QA/QC.

· Interpretation of geotechnical (surface & underground) and backfill monitoring data.

· Development and implementation of geotechnical and backfill management plans, standards and procedures.

· Geotechnical and backfill engineering studies and optimisation projects.

· Risk assessments and support to operational decision-making.

· Collaboration with operations and technical teams.

· Technical reporting and communication with site and corporate stakeholders.

· Mentoring, training and upskilling of technical staff.

· Work rosters (8 days on/ 6 days off in Australia, 14 days on/ 14 days off in Canada/ USA) but can often provide the flexibility to work other rosters to suit your preference.

Who are we looking for?

We are interested in candidates with a practical mindset and strong operational experience. The ideal candidates will have:

· A degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Geology, Chemical Engineering or equivalent will be considered.

· Ideally 2+ years’ experience in mining operations.

· Practical experience in geotechnical engineering, backfill engineering, or a combination of both.

· Exposure to underground mining environments (open pit experience also valued).

· A robust understanding of rock mass behaviour, ground support, and/or backfill systems.

· The ability to work independently while seeking guidance when needed.

· Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively to all stakeholders, including mining personnel, technical personnel (i.e. geology, survey, engineers) and management.

· Ability to build and maintain positive relationships required to achieve role purpose.

· Eligibility to work in Australia, Canada, or the USA.

Desirable (but not essential):

· Chartered / Professional Engineer status or working toward it.

· Experience across multiple commodities or mining methods (SLC, LHOS, BC, etc.)

Technology Skills:

· Competency in mining CAD software e.g. Deswik

· Exposure to modelling software, desired but not essential.

· Competent in MS office.
