Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland, offering laboratory services in the disciplines of: anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics. PQ also provides an invaluable service to Queenslanders by supporting a coordinated response to incidents and disasters.

About the role:

The Anatomical Pathology section performs routine and complex histological, immunohistochemical and cytological investigations.

You will be an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist, who undertakes duties with a high level of independence. The position is also responsible for performing and validating a broad range of complex and wide-ranging histological, cytological and immunohistochemical investigations consistently and accurately. You will possess a high level of clinical interpretative skills and be a resource within the department in this area. As such, you will take a lead role in one or more of the areas within the department, including staff training, staff education, documentation of process within the department, quality monitoring and improvement or instrumentation trouble shooting.

Key responsibilities include:

- Apply a range of histology and cytology methods and procedures including routine processes, routine special stains and advanced complex special stains, urgent frozen section protocols and other ancillary applications in the management of surgical and non-coronial autopsy cases commensurate with the level of knowledge and expertise essential for the reporting and validation of histological reports.
- Undertake surgical cut-up, diagnostic specimen management, testing and related duties following established accredited protocols and standards in accordance with professional and ethical standards and NPAAC requirements.
- Actively participate in both the Histology and Cytology Laboratory activities as a team member cooperating to meet deadlines, providing backup when unexpected events occur requiring urgent attention,



and reprioritising work commitments in a changing work environment.
- Develop scientific knowledge and expertise in cytology and histology through active learning by engaging in professional development activities both formal and informal
- Participate in the identification, development and implementation of quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification that enhance the delivery of Anatomical Pathology services both within the division and to external clients.
- Work cooperatively to provide direction to assistant and support staff and communicate effectively within the laboratory and with clients both internal and external to the laboratory.
- Participate in range of various shifts Monday to Friday and after-hours weekend on-call to meet service delivery requirements.

Role fit:

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

- Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in Anatomical Pathology techniques and its application in a diagnostic laboratory.
- Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation / certification.
- Proven willingness and ability to actively participate in and contribute to continuing education and other professional development activities.
- Proven ability to work and communicate effectively within a team environment to achieve the goals of the work unit including the meeting of critical deadlines.
- Demonstrated high levels of attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks within the anatomical pathology laboratory
- Availability to participate in roster system across the operating hours of the department
