Support Aboriginal patients through culturally safe hospital care as a valued liaison across southern Adelaide health services.

This position is Aboriginal identified. In accordance with an exemption granted by the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal(SACAT) under sections 30, 52 and 103 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (SA), only applicants of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent are eligible to be appointed. Important to advise work hours - 13:00pm - 21:00pm Monday to Friday.

About the role:

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers (AHLO) are important partners of clinical staff in ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients hospital journey is safe and culturally sensitive. The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison provides cultural support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients admitted in hospital within Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN), as well as their escorts.

Duties for the role will include:

- Work alongside hospital clinicians in assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patient's navigate the health system, as part of the support for their overall hospital journey, from admissions to discharge including liaison with their home community health centre to ensure continuity of care.
- Assist clinicians in communicating with clients regarding their health care and health procedure, and any other health information, in a manner that is culturally sensitive and taking into considerations of any language barrier.
- In consultation with relevant clinical staff, explain health care and clinical procedure to patients in a manner that is easily understandable and to maximise patients' cooperation to their care.
- Responsible for coordination of transport and transport arrangements for patients and their escorts, including liaison with PATS coordinators for patients and escorts from interstate.
- Advocate for use of appropriate language interpreter when needed, and monitors Aboriginality status is acknowledged and recorded appropriately for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
- Acting as an effective role model for clients in the community.

About you:

- Cert III or IV in Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice or Community Care
- Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally sensitive and accountable manner with Aboriginal individuals, families and communities
- Ability to develop supportive and collaborative relationships with Aboriginal individuals, families and communities.
- Significant experience in working with Aboriginal individuals, their families and communities.
- Experience in computing skills, including email and work processing.
- Experience in working closely with Aboriginal health services and mainstream service providers
