Union Organiser – Northern Territory
Our Union is growing and going from strength to strength in Queensland and the Northern Territory. We’re looking for an Organiser to join our team, working out of our Darwin office.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union is one of Australia’s largest trade unions and covers workers in many areas including metals and engineering, manufacturing, rail, defence and aerospace, scientific and technical, print and vehicle manufacturing.
The position involves working with members, potential members, union delegates and other Officials and Officers of the AMWU and other Unions and employers. The position may involve some regional and occasional interstate travel.
The salary package will be commensurate with experience, and includes a fully maintained Union Vehicle and above SGC employer superannuation.
Typical Duties:
- Recruitment of new members in current workplaces, growing and maintaining union density in existing workplaces.
- Build and develop strong union structures in new and existing workplaces, including identifying and developing new and existing Delegates and HSRs
- Ensure that all delegates participate in the union education program and that opportunities are promoted for delegates to use skills learnt and to participate in further union education
- Develop and implement workplace organising plans
- Utilise effective advocacy, negotiation, campaigning, record keeping, note taking and public speaking skills to ensure that the union campaign objectives are met
- Understand and utilise appropriate knowledge of industrial legislation, and industrial tactics and strategy, to ensure that industrial action is effectively and appropriately developed, used and managed
- Attend and support enterprise bargaining negotiations ensuring that union agreements meet the campaign objectives of the union
- Understand and employ corporate campaigning, research and critical analysis tools to ensure that the union campaign objectives are met and are effectively and efficiently targeted
- Utilise and maintain record keeping through the IMIS Database or agreed equivalent (training provided)
- Respond to safety or industrial issues in member workplaces
- Adhere to requirements of the Fair Work Act, WHS Act and other Acts and Instruments affecting your employment; Follow policies and procedures of the AMWU
- You will be accountable to the Rules, policy Union Leadership and Union Councils for your activity and have the capacity to critically report in respect to the Union policies.

Essential Selection Criteria
Demonstrated commitment to trade unionism and social justice
- High standard of work ethic and self-motivation
- Excellent listening, verbal communication and interpersonal skills– ability to establish rapport, explore issues, encourage critical analysis and gain commitment to action
- Ability to lead, motivate, develop and mobilise potential union members, existing union member and workplace activists
- Ability to analyse issues/problems and develop strategies to deal with them
- Ability to deal professionally with diverse groups of people including members, delegates and Union Officials.
- Unrestricted drivers licence
- No restriction on holding a State or Federal right of entry/WHS permit
Hours
- 38 hours per week
- Monthly RDO
