Public Sector People are partnering with a local government organisation to recruit for a Financial Accounting Coordinator to join them ASAP on a contract.
Contract: 6 month
Immediate start
Hourly pay rate: $75-90p/h + super
This is a hands-on role with real influence, supporting both day-to-day operations and longer-term financial planning.
The Role
You’ll take ownership of key finance functions while also driving improvements across systems and processes. This includes:
- Lead and coordinate the Financial Accounting team, ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of core finance functions across the organisation.
- Oversee operational financial activities including Accounts Payable, Payroll, reconciliations, cash management and related financial processes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, legislative requirements, council policies and internal control frameworks.
- Coordinate month-end and year-end financial reporting processes, supporting the preparation of statutory financial statements and external audits.
- Monitor financial controls, balance sheet integrity and general ledger governance to maintain the accuracy and reliability of financial information.
- Partner with the Rates and Revenue team and other business units to ensure integrated financial processes and effective service delivery across Council.
- Provide leadership, guidance and support to team members, fostering a collaborative, customer-focused and high-performing work environment.
- Develop and coordinate work plans, priorities and resource allocation to meet organisational objectives, community expectations and statutory deadlines.
- Analyse financial information, identify trends and opportunities for process improvement, and provide practical recommendations to management.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders, external agencies, auditors, suppliers and service providers.
- Respond to complex financial enquiries and ensure the delivery of accurate, timely and professional advice to stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, service quality and financial governance outcomes.
About You
You’ll bring a mix of technical finance expertise and systems capability, along with the confidence to engage across the business.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in a finance, accounting, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training and qualified experience.
- Professional accounting accreditation, or demonstrated progression towards obtaining a recognised accounting designation, with a commitment to completion.
- Experience managing financial reporting obligations and supporting compliance requirements within a complex organisational environment, ideally within a regulated sector.
- Sound understanding of contemporary financial management principles, governance requirements and legislative frameworks, with the ability to interpret and apply them effectively.
- Demonstrated experience in key financial accounting functions, including financial controls, balance sheet management, statutory obligations, cash management and reporting processes.
- Well-developed organisational and review capabilities, with a track record of delivering accurate outcomes while managing multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
- Strong proficiency in financial systems and data analysis tools, including advanced spreadsheet capabilities, with the ability to communicate insights to a broad range of stakeholders.
- Commitment to delivering responsive and professional service, fostering positive outcomes for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships across varied stakeholder groups, including senior leaders and external organisations.
- Demonstrated capacity to contribute to a collaborative team culture through knowledge sharing, effective communication and constructive resolution of workplace issues, supporting positive organisational outcomes.
