BHS Equipment is looking for an experienced Leading Hand Heavy Diesel Mechanic to join our growing team and take a key role in the day-to-day operation and development of our workshop.

n

This position is suited to an experienced Heavy Diesel Mechanic who is ready to step into a leadership role but doesn't want to completely step away from the tools.

n

The role is approximately 50% hands-on mechanical work and 50% workshop coordination and administration. You'll work alongside the team while also helping manage jobs, customers, parts, quoting and the overall workshop workflow.

n

We're looking for someone who can lead from the front, make decisions, support the mechanics around them and help us continue building a productive and effective workshop.

The Role

n

As Leading Hand, you'll take responsibility for helping keep the workshop organised, productive and moving forward.

n

Your responsibilities will include:

n

n
- Leading, supporting and working alongside the workshop team
n
- Remaining hands-on with approximately 50% of your time on the tools
n
- Coordinating and allocating workshop jobs
n
- Managing workshop workflow and priorities
n
- Ordering parts, materials and equipment
n
- Preparing quotes and repair estimates
n
- Liaising directly with customers
n
- Providing customers with job updates and managing their requirements
n
- Reviewing job cards, labour hours and parts used
n
- Monitoring jobs to ensure they remain productive and on track
n
- Diagnosing and assisting with more complex mechanical faults
n
- Checking completed work and maintaining high workmanship standards
n
- Supporting and mentoring mechanics and apprentices
n
- Maintaining strong safety and housekeeping standards
n
- Working closely with management to improve workshop systems, productivity and profitability
n

This isn't a role where you'll sit behind a desk all day. We want someone who is prepared to pick up the tools when required,



help the team solve problems and lead by example.

About You

n

To be successful in this role, you'll ideally have:

n

n
- Trade qualification as a Diesel / Heavy Diesel Mechanic
n
- Strong experience with trucks, trailers and heavy diesel equipment
n
- Previous Leading Hand, Foreman or supervisory experience
n
- Strong mechanical diagnostic and fault-finding ability
n
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
n
- Good computer and administration skills
n
- Experience preparing quotes and estimating mechanical repairs
n
- An understanding of labour, parts and job costing
n
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
n
- The ability to prioritise multiple jobs in a busy workshop
n
- A proactive approach to solving problems
n
- The confidence to make decisions and take ownership
n
- The ability to lead a team while remaining hands-on
n
- A strong commitment to quality, safety and getting the job done properly
n

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who takes ownership of the workshop rather than waiting to be told what needs to happen next.

Hours

n

This is a busy, fast-paced workshop environment.

n

Working days can be up to 10 hours, with the potential for 12-hour days during particularly busy periods.

n

Weekend availability is highly desirable when workload or customer requirements demand it.
