THE ORGANISATION
The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia’s national weather, climate, water, oceans and space weather agency. Its observations, forecasts, warnings and advice support emergency services, industry, government and communities across Australia.
The Bureau is undertaking a major upgrade of its Automatic Weather Station network to ensure it remains reliable, resilient, secure and fit for purpose into the future.
THE OPPORTUNITY
An experienced Calibration Officer is required to support the successful delivery of the Automatic Weather Station Infrastructure Upgrade Project across more than 750 sites throughout Australia and the Pacific.
Reporting to the Manager, Standards & Metrology Laboratory, you will be responsible for the calibration, acceptance testing, verification and maintenance of electronic, electrical, mechanical, meteorological and hydrological instrumentation.
This position would suit someone with solid practical knowledge of instrumentation, calibration and measurement, ideally gained within a calibration, metrology or standards laboratory.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate and undertake the calibration, testing, verification and maintenance of laboratory and field equipment
- Manage the accurate processing of large volumes of meteorological instrumentation
- Schedule calibration activities in line with project rollout requirements and laboratory capacity
- Conduct acceptance testing and technical evaluation of new instrumentation
- Analyse operational data, investigate equipment issues and report on findings
- Prepare procedures, technical reports and work instructions
- Design, code,
test and document computer programs supporting scientific and operational activities
- Provide technical advice to project and operational stakeholders
- Support the continued development and improvement of laboratory calibration and testing practices
- Contribute to maintaining compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 quality standards
- Work collaboratively with project managers, metrologists, inventory officers and other calibration personnel
- Comply with relevant work health and safety requirements, APS Values and workplace policies
ABOUT YOU
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- Demonstrated practical experience in calibration, measurement traceability and uncertainty
- Experience working with electronic, electrical, mechanical or scientific instrumentation
- Robust practical troubleshooting, testing and analytical skills
- Advanced capability with Microsoft Excel and the broader Microsoft 365 suite
- Experience documenting technical processes, test results and investigations
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow documented procedures
- Strong organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and meet project timeframes
- High-level written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to build effective working relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- A commitment to quality, safety, diversity and continuous improvement
Experience with meteorological, hydrological or environmental monitoring equipment will be highly regarded, as will familiarity with ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 17025 quality systems.
EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
- Location: Docklands VIC
- Contract term: Three years, anticipated from 5th October 2026 to 4th October 2029
- Hours: Full-time, 38 hours per week
- Working arrangements: Attendance onsite is required five days per week due to the need to access laboratory equipment
- Working hours: Generally 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, with some flexibility subject to operational requirements
- Security clearance: Not required
