About us

NEN Consulting is an Australian utilities and infrastructure consultancy. We help major Australian infrastructure projects and property developments de-risk their utilities engagement, from grid connections and high voltage engineering to data centre power, private and embedded networks, and public lighting design. Our team of engineers, consultants and designers bring over 100 years of combined industry experience, and we're proud to be nimble enough to stay genuinely hands-on with every client and project.

Our values — Knowledge, Results, Integrity, Respect and Collaboration — shape how we work with clients and with each other. We take pride in simplifying complex utilities problems and delivering exact, reliable outcomes for the infrastructure projects that keep Australia moving.

About the role

We're looking for an Electrical HV Engineer to join our Melbourne CBD Engineering team, driving the design and delivery of high voltage electrical networks including primary substation design and transformer specification across major infrastructure and utilities projects. Reporting to our Engineering Manager, you'll take ownership of assigned work packages from design through to construction and commissioning, working alongside senior engineers, project managers and clients to deliver safe, compliant and reliable outcomes.

This role covers the full scope of HV substation delivery preparing and reviewing electrical designs, calculations and specifications for HV networks, transformers, switchgear and associated primary plant alongside the project planning,

technical risk management and client-facing work expected of a senior project engineer. You'll also provide technical input into tenders and fee proposals, and play a key role in growing NEN's grid connections and HV engineering practice.

Key responsibilities

- Design and review HV electrical networks, including transformer sizing, specification and substation layout

- Prepare engineering designs, calculations, specifications and technical documentation to relevant electrical codes and standards

- Manage assigned work packages to achieve accurate, safe, efficient and timely outcomes

- Support project planning and delivery — scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, risk management and reporting

- Identify and resolve technical issues in collaboration with senior engineers and project teams

- Provide technical input into tenders, fee proposals and project bids

- Support client and stakeholder engagement through clear, professional technical communication

- Work collaboratively with internal teams, subject matter experts, vendors and contractors

About you

- Essential:

• Minimum 5+ years relevant engineering and project delivery experience

• Demonstrated experience designing and delivering HV electrical networks,

including transformer design/specification and substation primary design

• Strong working knowledge of electrical codes, standards, legislation and regulatory frameworks

• Proficiency in engineering software and relevant HV design tools

• Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical)

• Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or eligibility, and Registered Professional Engineer (NER, RPEV or equivalent) preferred

Desirable:

• Exposure to tendering, proposal development and commercial project considerations

• Experience across grid connections, embedded networks or data centre power projects

You'll also bring:

• Highly professional, independent, self-organising and self-motivated

• Client-focused with strong service and delivery awareness

• Analytical thinker with well-developed problem-solving capability

• Resilient and adaptable in dynamic project environments

• Innovative and willing to apply learning to improve outcomes

• Highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

• Works effectively across cross-functional internal and external teams, with the ability to manage and resolve conflict constructively

Why Join NEN

• A genuine opportunity to help shape NEN's growing HV substation and grid connections practice

• Exposure to major Australian infrastructure such as data centres and utilities projects from day one

• A close-knit, experienced team that genuinely invests in your development

• Melbourne CBD location
