Waypoint Consulting

Sydney

Join a growing Australian manufacturer and build a career in technical sales.
Waypoint is partnering exclusively with an established Australian manufacturing business to appoint a Sales Engineer at their Auburn site in Sydney.

The business specialises in carbon and coal products for water and wastewater treatment. Around two thirds of the work is domestic, servicing councils, water utilities and authorities and the contractors who work on their behalf. The remaining third is international, with customers across more than 25 countries and distributor relationships throughout Asia, Europe and, before long, South America.

It's family-owned, purpose-driven and growing. This role has been created because inbound demand is outpacing the current sales team.

Why this role is different
You'll be learning from a Sales Manager with almost thirty years in the industry, working closely with him to take on account history, specification knowledge and customer relationships built over a long career.

This is a great prospect for an early-career engineer, and it's a genuine head start in a specialist market.

The role

- Support the Business Development Manager and the wider sales team across inbound and outbound activity in the Australian water and wastewater treatment sector
- Manage customer relationships across councils, water utilities, authorities and contractors, starting with inbound enquiry and moving into outbound prospecting as your confidence grows
- Prepare quotes, respond to technical enquiries and progress opportunities through the sales cycle
- Work alongside the Sales Manager to build your knowledge of accounts, specifications and customer relationships
- Represent the business at Australian industry conferences
- Attend customer site visits,

initially shadowing a senior team member and progressively taking the lead
- Support the growing international distributor and contractor network, with the opportunity to travel as your experience develops
- Learn the full product portfolio

What is on offer

- Competitive base salary plus super
- Uncapped commission structure tied to top-line sales, reconciled quarterly, with outbound activity weighted higher to reward prospecting
- A guaranteed bonus component for the first six months while you build your book
- The business wants you to build slowly and correctly given the long sales cycles and the technical learning curve
- Car allowance, laptop, phone and standard business tools
- Structured shadowing and mentoring from senior team members on site visits and in customer conversations
- Attendance at three to four Australian conferences a year, with more if you want them
- International travel opportunity as you develop, predominantly across Asia, plus occasional Europe and South America
- A genuine long-term career. This is a business where people build careers rather than pass through

What the business is looking for
This is a hire built on attitude and cultural fit as much as background.

- An engineering qualification is preferred. Chemical, environmental, mechanical, mineral processing, civil or similar
- One to three years of post-graduate experience is ideal,

though the business is genuinely open to a graduate with the right attitude
- Practical and commercially minded. You don't need to be the deepest engineer in the room, but you should be able to hold your own on the product
- Comfortable and confident with people. You'll be in front of customers at conferences and on site, so you'll want to enjoy that side of the role
- A natural relationship builder, with the patience to develop accounts over time rather than chase quick wins
- Comfortable with AI and new tools, and interested in using them to work more effectively. This is a stated hiring principle across the business
- Genuinely curious, and willing to learn a specialist industry with long sales cycles
- A long-term career mindset
- Sydney-based

Water and wastewater experience is a plus but is not required. The business is deliberately open to engineers from adjacent sectors including filtration, process, minerals, chemicals and industrial products. Prior sales experience is not required.

Location and working arrangements
Auburn, Sydney, roughly 20 minutes from the CBD by train and 10 minutes from Auburn station. On-site parking is available and most of the team drive.

This is an office-first business, five days a week on site for the first twelve months. Additional flexibility becomes available as you establish yourself. The culture strongly favours work-life balance.

Additional information

- Engineering background preferred, prior sales experience not required
