About the role
Western Health is seeking an experienced and motivated Chemical Safety Coordinator to join our Safety, Risk & Emergency Management team within People & Culture. This role is responsible for leading the safe management of hazardous chemicals across our health service, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, reducing workplace risk, and supporting a culture of safety excellence. Working closely with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders, you will provide expert advice, deliver training, coordinate chemical risk management initiatives, and contribute to creating a safe environment for our patients, staff, visitors and community.
Key responsibilities
Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of chemical safety programs, systems and procedures.
Manage hazardous chemical inventories, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and manifest records across Western Health facilities.
Conduct chemical risk assessments, investigate incidents and near misses, and implement effective corrective actions.
Deliver chemical safety training, education programs and awareness initiatives for staff.
Collaborate with departments including Pharmacy, Pathology, Engineering and Environmental Services to ensure safe chemical management and regulatory compliance.
About you
Tertiary qualification in Chemistry, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience managing chemical safety within healthcare, laboratory or similarly regulated environments.
Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and codes of practice relating to hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods.
Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and training facilitation skills.
Strong analytical,
problem-solving and risk assessment capabilities, with the ability to influence safety outcomes across multidisciplinary teams.
