Senior Track Manager – can be based in Hobart or Launceston

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), this role will lead the operational oversight and delivery of Tasracing’s track management activities across the state, ensuring our tracks are safe, well maintained and ready for racing. Working closely with Track Managers and the WHS Manager to maintain high standards of track condition, operational performance and workplace safety for our staff and racing participants. This role will also provide advice and support in relation to venues that are not directly controlled by Tasracing, helping ensure appropriate track and safety standards are maintained across the industry.

Key Responsibilities

Track Operations & Racing Readiness

- Provide State-wide oversight of Tasracing’s track network, ensuring tracks are safe, fit for purpose and maintained to required racing standards.

- Work with Track Managers to develop and monitor annual maintenance programs and programs of works for each venue.

- Undertake regular travel across the State, including weekly site visits, to inspect tracks, review priorities and support Track Managers.

- Inspect tracks with Track Managers ahead of race meetings, identifying and ensuring any safety, condition or racing-readiness concerns are addressed and escalated appropriately.

- Provide operational cover when Track Managers are on leave and advice on non-Tasracing controlled venues.

Track & Surface Management

- Develop and oversee State-wide track maintenance, renovation and surface management programs in partnership with Track Managers.

- Oversee major track renovations and remedial works, ensuring they are planned, delivered and monitored to the required standard.

- Establish consistent standards for turf, sand and all-weather surfaces, including irrigation, drainage, moisture management and surface performance.

- Use inspections, data, weather information and industry feedback to monitor performance, identify risks and drive improvement.

Safety, Integrity & Compliance

- Set high standards for track safety and ensure risks are identified, managed and escalated appropriately.





- Oversee consistent track inspection and assessment processes across all venues.

- Work closely with the WHS Manager and Tasracing Integrity Unit, including Stewards and relevant integrity personnel, on track safety, racing suitability and emerging risks.

- Attend relevant Track Manager toolbox meetings and promote a strong safety and risk culture.

- Ensure track operations comply with racing rules, WHS requirements and Tasracing policies and procedures.

Leadership, Coaching & Capability

- Lead, support and provide clear direction to Track Managers, ensuring consistent standards and accountability across the State.

- Coach and develop Track Managers, building technical capability, confidence and leadership skills, and identify opportunities for ongoing upskilling.

- Establish clear expectations, work programs and performance standards, supporting succession planning and knowledge sharing.

- Promote a positive, accountable and safety-focused culture across track operations.

Projects, Assets & Resources

- Identify and prioritise long-term track, facility and infrastructure requirements.

- Support Track Managers with annual programs of works and assist with capital works planning and budgets.

- Oversee significant track renovations, projects and contractors, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to standard.

- Provide advice on track upgrades, drainage, irrigation, lighting, plant and equipment and other infrastructure requirements.

- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, asset utilisation and long-term cost management.

Stakeholder Management & Communication

- Act as a senior point of contact for industry participants on track-related matters, including trainers, riders and clubs.

- Work with Track Managers to respond to track-related concerns and enquiries, escalating significant or unresolved matters to the COO.

- Build strong relationships with the Tasracing Integrity Unit, Stewards, veterinarians, WHS, clubs, contractors and other key stakeholders.

- Provide the COO with regular advice on track performance, risks, priorities and longer-term requirements.

Risk, Weather & Contingency Planning

- Monitor weather, environmental and operational risks that may impact track performance, safety or racing.

- Work with Track Managers to develop practical contingency arrangements for extreme weather and other significant operational risks.

- Provide advice and support during significant or emerging issues,



ensuring appropriate escalation and communication.

Continuous Improvement & Best Practice

- Drive consistency in track management across the State while recognising the specific requirements of individual venues.

- Keep abreast of national and international best practice in track management, surfaces, safety and technology.

- Use data, research, industry feedback and operational experience to identify and implement practical improvements to track performance, safety and efficiency.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

- Track & Turf Management: Relevant qualifications in turf management, horticulture, agronomy or a related field, together with significant experience in racetrack, turf or surface management.

- Leadership Experience: Demonstrated experience leading teams and providing direction and oversight to operational managers, with a proven ability to build capability, set standards and hold people accountable.

- Safety & Risk: Strong understanding of workplace safety, risk management and the ability to identify, assess and respond to operational and track-related risks.

- Stakeholder Management: Highly developed communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with Track Managers, Stewards, veterinarians, riders, trainers, clubs, contractors and other industry stakeholders.

- Technology & Reporting: Sound IT skills, including Microsoft Office, with the ability to use data, reporting and other information to monitor performance and support decision-making.

- Flexibility: Willingness to work outside normal business hours, including race meetings, weekends and public holidays, when required.

- Driver’s Licence: Current C Class driver’s licence.
