Arlie's Shed
Gympie
Arlie’s Shed is growing, and we’re looking for passionate and capable Disability Support Workers to join our team and support an expanding client base.
This is an opportunity for someone who is confident working with complex behaviours, high support needs and individuals requiring a consistent, person-centred approach. We’re looking for support workers who can build genuine relationships, remain calm under pressure and support participants to achieve meaningful goals and greater independence.
Located in central Gympie, our purpose-built facility spans two levels and includes an outdoor garden area. We provide a range of engaging activities including woodwork, arts and crafts, cooking and gardening, as well as regular social and community activities such as Friday night socials, Saturday socials and Thursday day trips.
Alongside centre-based activities, Arlie’s Shed provides in-home support, community access, personal care, mild-to-moderate behaviour support and high-care support.
About the Role
As a Disability Support Worker at Arlie’s Shed, you will work across our facility, participants’ homes and the broader community.
A key focus of this position is supporting participants who may experience complex behaviours of concern, emotional dysregulation, communication challenges and higher support needs.
You will be expected to:
- Provide consistent, respectful and person-centred support to participants with complex and high support needs.
- Implement individual support strategies and contribute to positive behaviour support approaches under the direction of the participant’s support plan and relevant professionals.
- Recognise potential triggers, changes in behaviour and early signs of escalation, responding proactively and appropriately.
- Remain calm, patient and professional when supporting participants experiencing distress or behaviours of concern.
- Build trust and meaningful relationships through active listening, empathy, consistency and genuine engagement.
- Support participants to develop independence, confidence, communication and life skills.
- Provide community access and support participants to engage safely in social, recreational and community activities.
- Provide in-home support, including household tasks, meal preparation, cleaning and laundry.
- Provide hands-on personal care according to individual needs, including showering, dressing, grooming, and limited medication supervision.
- Assist participants to work towards their individual goals and develop skills that promote greater independence.
- Maintain accurate participant records, progress notes, health records and behavioural documentation in accordance with Arlie’s Shed policies.
- Identify and promptly report changes in participant presentation, behaviour, health or wellbeing.
- Follow all relevant safety, infection control, manual handling and organisational procedures.
- Work collaboratively with families, support coordinators, allied health professionals and other members of the participant’s support team.
We’re looking for more than someone who can simply complete a list of support tasks.
We’re looking for someone with a special talent, skill or passion that they can bring to our participants.
You might be someone who can teach woodwork, create art, cook, garden, play music, engage people through sport, develop creative activities or simply has an exceptional ability to connect with people who may find traditional support environments challenging.
Most importantly, you will be someone who understands that behaviour is communication and who is committed to looking beyond the behaviour to understand the person and their needs.
You will ideally have:
- Experience working in disability support, particularly with participants with complex behaviours or high support needs.
- A calm,
resilient and emotionally regulated approach.
- The ability to establish boundaries while maintaining positive and respectful relationships.
- Strong communication and observational skills.
- The ability to follow individual support and behaviour support plans consistently.
- A genuine commitment to participant choice, dignity, rights and independence.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- A willingness to learn and undertake additional training as required.
A Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) or equivalent is preferred, although we will consider applicants with relevant experience and the right attitude.
A Blue Card (WWC) and Yellow Card (Disability Screening) are mandatory.
Additional training may be required, including behaviour support, safe and healthy meal preparation and other participant-specific support requirements.
What We Offer
- A varied role across centre-based, community and in-home support.
- The opportunity to work with participants with a range of support needs.
- A supportive and engaging work workplace.
- The opportunity to use your own skills, interests and talents to enrich participants’ lives.
- Meaningful work focused on building independence, confidence and quality of life.
- Opportunities to develop your skills in complex behaviour and high-care support.
Availability
The ability to work across different environments and varying shifts is essential. Hours may include centre-based support, community access and in-home care. Shifts may start from 5:30am or may finish at 6:30pm
You will also be required to work at least one Friday night or Saturday per month as part of our social program. These shifts may conclude at 10pm.
If you are passionate about disability support, have experience with complex behaviours, and want to be part of a team that sees the person before the behaviour, we would love to hear from you.
Apply now to join Arlie’s Shed and help us create meaningful opportunities for the people we support.
