HorizonOne Recruitment

Braddon

Multiple APS6 and EL1 opportunities to manage development caseloads within a significant Commonwealth regulatory function.

Our client is a large federal government body responsible for a significant regulatory function within the Commonwealth, working closely with industry, state and territory governments, and the community.

It’s an active period of reform for the regulatory space our client operates in, with ongoing work to strengthen assessment, approval and compliance processes across a broad range of sectors.

The Opportunity

Our client is hiring multiple Policy and Regulatory Officers at both APS6 and EL1 levels, working within one of five specialist branches covering environmental assessments by region, post approvals, and regulatory support.

APS6 positions focus on managing your own caseload of development proposals through to decision, while EL1 positions carry the same caseload responsibilities alongside leadership of a small team.

You’ll have access to:

- Multiple positions available nationally, so you can base yourself where it suits you
- Genuine variety, from assessing renewable energy and major infrastructure proposals to airports, agriculture, housing and mining developments
- Direct line of sight to decision-makers, with your analysis and briefings feeding straight into decisions on environmental approvals.
- At EL1 level, the chance to lead and develop a small team, rather than only managing your own caseload
- Full-time or part-time arrangements

The Role

The core caseload is the same at both levels, with EL1 positions offering additional leadership responsibility and greater complexity.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Managing development proposals and assessing their environmental impacts in accordance with relevant legislation, policy and procedure
- Applying a sound understanding of the context and operation of relevant Commonwealth and state legislation and policy frameworks

- Analysing and evaluating a range of information to draft briefing material that informs supervisors and decision-makers on the environmental impacts of development proposals
- Leading stakeholder engagement through written, online and face-to-face activities
- Identifying broader factors, trends and influences that may affect the division’s work
- Contributing to policy development, project management, stakeholder engagement and business improvement activities

As an EL1 Policy and Regulatory Officer, you will be:

- Managing a small team
- Overseeing more complex or high-profile proposals
- Quality assuring briefing material prepared for senior decision-makers

The Ideal Person

You’re someone who can build robust working relationships while still holding a firm, evidence-based line on regulatory matters.

At EL1 level, you’ll also be comfortable leading a small team alongside your own caseload.

You will bring the following skills and experience:

- The ability to foster and sustain productive working relationships with your team, supervisors and stakeholders, and to contribute to a culture that is inclusive, supportive, collaborative and resilient
- The ability to think strategically, identify effective solutions using sound judgement, and progress work with minimal direction
- Good organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise and manage competing tasks to meet deadlines in a dynamic and busy working environment
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to lead conversations with a variety of stakeholders
- Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to research, critically analyse information, and write concisely
- A demonstrated commitment to learning and self-development, and an understanding of the impact of your behaviour on others

For EL1’s, it’s also desirable if you bring:

- Demonstrated experience leading and developing a small team in a regulatory, policy or technical environment
- A track record of contributing to policy development or process improvement in a regulatory or compliance setting

Salary / Rate

- $100,000 – $145,000 + Super
- Permanent role, with full-time or part-time arrangements available
- Multiple locations available nationally
