Pittwater House is seeking a full-time Head of Department - English commencing Term 1, 2027.
Pittwater House seeks an experienced and accomplished English educator to join the School as Head of Department – English. This is a full-time role with a Leadership Level 3 allowance. The successful applicant will provide strong academic, curriculum and staff leadership across the English Faculty from Years 7–12, with responsibility for strengthening teaching practice, student learning outcomes, NESA compliance, assessment quality, collaborative faculty culture and the ongoing development of English programs.
The Head of Department – English will lead a team of English teachers through regular faculty meetings, collaborative planning, mentoring, modelling of effective practice and the promotion of high expectations for teaching, learning and professional conduct. The role requires a leader who can communicate clearly, build trust, support staff, lead change, and contribute to a coherent and positive professional culture within the faculty.
The successful applicant will have strong knowledge of the NSW English curriculum, including Stage 6 English, and demonstrated capacity to oversee scope and sequences, teaching programs, assessment schedules, assessment notifications, registers of student achievement, RoSA and HSC requirements, and other NESA documentation. They will also lead the design and quality assurance of assessment tasks, marking criteria and feedback processes to ensure they are valid, equitable,
appropriately differentiated and consistent with NESA requirements and Pittwater House expectations.
The role requires the capacity to use student achievement data, including internal assessment, NAPLAN, Minimum Standards, RoSA and HSC results, to evaluate faculty performance, identify areas for improvement and implement evidence-informed strategies that strengthen literacy, engagement and academic achievement. The Head of Department – English will also work collaboratively with the Deputy Principal, Director of Studies, Director of Teaching and Learning, Heads of School, Coordinator of Diverse Learning and other faculty leaders to support whole-school curriculum priorities, academic care, literacy development, reporting practices and strategic initiatives.
All staff contribute to the School’s pastoral care and co-curricular programs (note: no Saturday sport). The successful applicant will be expected to participate in pastoral care, camps, and co-curricular activities as required.
