Job Description
The Sheet Metal Worker is responsible for the accurate fabrication, assembly, installation, modification and maintenance of sheet metal components and ductwork systems used in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC) applications.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Interpret engineering drawings, shop detail drawings, specifications, sketches and cut lists, and confirm dimensions before commencing work.
- Mark out, develop patterns and lay out sheet metal for ducting, plenums, transitions, offsets, taper pieces, elbows, spigots, flanges, housings, hoods, flashings and associated HVAC components.
- Cut, notch, punch, drill, fold, roll, form, swage, bead and shape sheet metal using guillotines, folders, press brakes, rolls, notchers, turret punches, plasma cutters, nibblers, shears and hand tools.
- Operate and set up computer-controlled fabrication equipment (including CNC plasma and coil line equipment) where trained and authorised to do so.
- Join and assemble components using riveting, spot welding, MIG/TIG welding, soldering, brazing, self-tapping fasteners, cleats, sealants and proprietary duct connection systems.
- Fabricate in a range of materials including galvanised steel, zincalume, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and pre-insulated panel.
- Apply duct construction methods, gauges, reinforcement, sealing and joint types consistent with project specifications and applicable Australian Standards.
- Undertake finishing work including deburring, dressing, sealing, insulating and preparing components for delivery or installation.
- Check and verify completed work against drawings and tolerances, and rectify defects prior to release from the workshop.
- Minimise material wastage through efficient nesting, cutting and stock management,
and report material shortages or defects to the Supervisor.
- Install ductwork, fittings, dampers, grilles, registers, diffusers, louvres, plenums, flashings and related HVAC sheet metal components at client and construction sites.
- Set out and install support systems including hangers, rods, brackets, angle iron and anchoring systems appropriate to the substrate and load.
- Erect, use and dismantle access equipment (including step platforms, scaffolds, elevated work platforms and ladders) in accordance with training, licensing and safe work method statements.
- Seal, insulate and pressure-test installed ductwork where required, and assist with commissioning, balancing and system checks.
- Modify and adapt components on site to accommodate services clashes, structural conditions and variations, escalating significant deviations to the Supervisor before proceeding.
- Liaise professionally with site supervisors, builders, other trades and clients, and comply with all site inductions, permits and site-specific rules.
- Inspect, diagnose, service, repair and replace existing ductwork and sheet metal components, including in occupied and operating premises
- Maintain tools, plant and equipment in protected working order
- Comply with the company's quality management, environmental and record-keeping procedures.
