About the role
The Skipper is responsible for the protected, compliant, and productive operation of an Octopus fishing vessel. This includes ensuring all crew, equipment, and vessel operations meet company, regulatory, and safety standards at all times.
Key responsibilities
Catch octopus for commercial processing and sale
Maintain a valid Skipper's Licence and ensure all required training, tickets, and certifications remain current and compliant with maritime and fisheries regulations
Ensure full compliance with relevant Western Australian Fishing Authority
Ensure all vessel certifications required by AMSA are current and compliant
Accurately complete and submit all logbooks and documentation required by Fisheries and/or the Company in a timely manner
Ensure the safety of all crew members at all times while at sea and during vessel operations
Conduct and maintain crew inductions, safety drills, and seafaring training in line with industry best practices
Supervise and manage all deckhands,
including training in longline management, pot handling, and safe work practices
Ensure all maintenance is conducted to meet AMSA standards and maintain the vessel in a secure and seaworthy condition at all times
Plan and manage fishing schedules, pot rotations, and locations to achieve optimal catch outcomes in line with sustainability and compliance standards
Monitor catch quality and fishing effort, ensuring accurate reporting to both Fisheries and the Company
About you
Valid Skipper's Licence appropriate to vessel size and class. Master Class 5 as well as MEDII
Demonstrated experience in commercial fishing operations
Sound knowledge of AMSA regulations, Fisheries WA requirements, and maritime safety practices preferable
Proven leadership and crew management experience
Strong communication, record-keeping, and organisational skills
