Early Career Chance
Whether you have recently graduated or have up to two years of industry experience, this role offers the opportunity to work alongside recognised experts in flood and coastal engineering while building skills in hydraulic modelling, coastal processes, field investigations, GIS, programming, data analysis and engineering design.

Our Manly Hydraulics Laboratory’s Flood and Coastal teams are seeking to appoint two Project Engineers to support and contribute to a range of professional coastal and hydraulic engineering investigations under the guidance and mentoring of experienced engineers and scientists. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop technical expertise while working on high-profile flood, coastal and water engineering projects across NSW.

In addition, the role undertakes and contributes to oceanic, coastal, estuarine, riverine, water, wastewater, water quality, stormwater and flood systems engineering projects and/or participates in larger engineering/environmental data monitoring/water infrastructure projects, such as dams, spillways and breakwaters, to achieve project objectives and deliver high quality and innovative client outcomes.

Please note travel to regional areas, including overnight stays, may occasionally be required.

About You

You are an enthusiastic early-career engineer with 1–2 years of professional experience and a strong interest in flood, coastal, hydraulic or environmental engineering. You enjoy solving technical problems, working with data,



and learning new skills while contributing to projects that make a positive difference for communities across NSW.

You are curious, adaptable and detail-oriented, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. You are keen to develop your technical and professional capabilities and are motivated to learn from experienced engineers and scientists.

You have some exposure to engineering analysis, modelling, GIS, programming, data analytics, field work, or technical reporting through employment, university projects or internships. You are comfortable taking direction from senior staff while progressively building the confidence to manage your own work and contribute to project outcomes.

You are proactive in seeking opportunities to expand your skills and knowledge including, for example, GIS, coding and data analysis, and enjoy applying sound professional judgement to technical tasks. You communicate clearly and can prepare concise reports and documentation for review by senior staff and clients.

As this role requires participation in a range of coastal and water engineering investigations, you will be expected to work in environments surrounded by or nearby water, and the ability to swim is encouraged.

Essential Requirements

- A professional engineering or environmental science degree with relevant experience, or other relevant qualifications.
- A valid NSW Driver’s License and willingness to travel to remote locations, including overnight stay.

is a business unit within the Water Group of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, that provides specialist and impartial advice relating to coastal and water engineering and water flow assurance, utilising physical and numerical modelling, NATA accredited facilities and extensive data collection programs in water, sewer, stormwater, irrigation, coastal, riverine and environmental systems.
