Accessioning Assistant, Harvard University (Cambridge)
Archives and Special Collections holdings span the ancient to the contemporary in rare books, archival collections, University records, and manuscripts. Recent acquisitions include costume designs, photographs of vaudeville performers, accounts of enslaved individuals in Cuba, papers of Soviet dissidents and American writers, and medieval manuscripts. The collections support research and a vigorous teaching program.
Technical Services for Archives and Special Collections seeks a responsible and productive Accessioning Assistant to support accessioning and baseline processing of archival collections. Duties may include assisting in the creation of finding aids, unpacking and rehousing collections, filing, labeling, working with Excel, transcription, arrangement and description of library material, and other relevant tasks benefiting the department. Library school students exploring work in special collections and archives are especially encouraged to apply.
Hours: 14/week
Qualifications
Required:
- BA/BS or equivalent.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications and systems.
- Attention to detail.
- Understanding of library holdings within broad historical and topical contexts.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Legible handwriting.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds.
- Familiarity with careful treatment and handling of special collections material.
Preferred:
- Current enrollment in a master's-level library or information science program (or equivalent ALA-accredited program).
- Previous experience in special collections.
- Experience with library information systems, including but not limited to ArchivesSpace, Alma, and Aeon (or alternative systems).
- Familiarity with current archival standards.
- Familiarity with some uses of Al in office settings.
