Radionuclide Therapy Fellow (unaccredited position)

Cancer Imaging Department

Full time – 12 months Contract commencing 1 February 2027

Eligible and enthusiastic candidates are encouraged to apply for this position now open at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre – a place where our normal days are extraordinary; as are the people we care for. This would be an ideal opportunity for nuclear medicine trainees who have completed their core training and seek further experience in radionuclide therapy. Radiation oncology and medical oncology trainees who have completed their core training and are interested in Lu-PSMA and Lu-Tate therapy as well as accredited endocrinology trainees with interest in thyroid cancer and Lu-Tate therapy in rare endocrine syndromes and functional neuroendocrine tumours would also be suitable candidates for this role.

Your role in our future

The Cancer Imaging Department provides a high level service in cancer diagnosis, staging, therapeutic monitoring and research. We perform over 10,000 PET/CT examinations per year. Our new home features 4 PET/CT cameras (one camera currently being replaced by a total body PET scanner), two multi-slice quantitative SPECT/CT, two CT, 3T MRI, ultrasound, digital mammography with tomosynthesis. We perform many non-FDG studies including F-18, Ga-68,



Cu-64, I-124 and Zr-89 radiotracers for both clinical and research purposes including first in-human studies. There is an integrated large nuclear medicine therapy facility for both outpatient and inpatient care including paediatrics; we performed over 1200 radionuclide therapies in 2024 with Lu-177, Tb-161, Ac-225, I-131 and Y-90 for malignancies including neuroendocrine, prostate, thyroid and lymphoma.

You would be working in therapeutic nuclear medicine, which is mostly an outpatient service, and primarily involved in patient’s initial visit, ongoing therapy and follow up with opportunities to be involved in research. Participation in pre-existing or new research projects for presentation or publication is strongly encouraged.

The Training position is not accredited by the AANMS for a core year of advanced training in nuclear medicine.

A medical degree and AHPRA registration are pre-requisites for appointment. You will need to either have completed one year of accredited core training in nuclear medicine or completed your core training years in medical oncology, radiation oncology or endocrinology.

Skills

- Medical Registration with AHPRA
- FRACP Part 1 or FRANZCR Part 2, or equivalent training in recognized training program
- Completion of at least one core year of nuclear medicine training, as accredited by JCTC or the equivalent, is preferred





- Completion of 2-core years of nuclear medicine training, as accredited by JCTC or the equivalent, is highly desirable.
- The position may also be suitable as an elective year of training for advanced trainees in endocrinology or medical oncology.

Key Accountabilities

1. Perform and Interpret Diagnostic procedures
- Understand protocols as applicable to Oncology.
- Modify techniques appropriately
- Produce clinical reports according to Department targets of accuracy and timeliness
- Liaise with clinicians to promote multi-disciplinary principles of practice and high standards of patient centred care.

- Perform Therapeutic Administrations

- Evaluate patients suitability for radionuclide therapy within or outside clinical trials
- Provide adequate clinical and safety information for the patient and carers
- Monitor the patients subsequent progress when appropriate

- Radiation Safety and Quality Assurance

- Understand Department QA activities and their relevance to staff and patient safety
- Perform all activities with adequate radiation safety standards
- Advise patients and carers regarding safety precautions
- Advise referrers regarding the safety of procedures in both standard and unusual scenarios

- Clinical Meetings

- Prepare and interpret Nuclear Medicine and PET images for presentation at clinical meetings
- Provide advice regarding available alternative imaging options
- Provide advice regarding possible radionuclide therapy options
