About the Position
SMWO Pty Ltd is seeking an experienced Automotive Electrician to join its Coburg North workshop. The role is dedicated to diagnosing, repairing, maintaining and installing electrical and electronic systems in motor vehicles, and is not a general motor mechanic position. As modern vehicles rely increasingly on electronic control, charging and accessory systems, the Automotive Electrician is a key specialist within the workshop, responsible for tracing faults accurately, completing electrical repairs efficiently and ensuring every vehicle's electrical systems and accessories operate safely and reliably before it is returned to the customer.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose electrical and electronic faults in motor vehicles using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment
- Inspect vehicle wiring, circuits, connectors and electrical components to identify faults and required repairs
- Repair or replace damaged wiring, switches, relays, fuses, lamps and related electrical components
- Diagnose and repair faults involving starter motors, alternators, charging systems and voltage regulation systems
- Install and connect electrical equipment, electronic components and vehicle accessories
- Test ignition and vehicle electrical systems and carry out necessary repairs or adjustments
- Remove and replace defective electrical and electronic assemblies where required
- Trace intermittent electrical faults and determine appropriate repair solutions
- Test completed repairs and installations to confirm correct operation before vehicles are returned to customers
- Use electrical diagrams, diagnostic information and manufacturer specifications when carrying out repairs
- Maintain accurate records of faults identified, diagnostic work performed and repairs completed
- Maintain tools and diagnostic equipment and follow workplace safety procedures
Requirements
- Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply
- Diploma of Automotive Technology or Certificate IV in Automotive Electrical Technology, or another relevant qualification in automotive electrical systems or a closely related field
- Minimum one year of relevant practical experience working with automotive electrical and electronic systems
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills, including experience using automotive electrical testing and diagnostic equipment
- Sound knowledge of vehicle wiring, starting, charging, ignition and electronic control systems
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a workshop team
- Positive attention to detail and a commitment to safe, high-quality workmanship
- Clear communication skills for explaining faults and repairs to colleagues and customers
- Any licence or registration required to undertake the duties of the position
