Conditions: PRIMARY PURPOSE The Wollongong Paediatric Service is the higher-level referral centre for paediatric care in ISLHD and includes a Paediatric Ward (20 beds), Neonatal Unit (12 beds) accepting deliveries of babies 32 weeks and over, the Paediatric Assessment Unit and Neonatal Hospital in the Home service. Wollongong Paediatrics has a 24 hour junior medical officer workforce including seven paediatric registrars and five residents (SRMOs and PGY2 RMOs). Paediatric consultants are available for support on site within business hours and on call outside of business hours. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES The Resident Medical Officer (SRMO), under supervision, is responsible for: • Assess and treat paediatric patients presenting to the ED with acute illness, including the provision of resuscitation if needed. • Manage paediatric inpatients on the Children's Ward and assess patients in the Paediatric Assessment Unit. • Attend high risk deliveries in the Birthing Unit or the Operating Theatres and provide neonatal resuscitation as required and manage common neonatal problems in the Special Care Nursery such as respiratory distress, prematurity, hypoglycaemia, suspected sepsis and jaundice. • Review infants on the postnatal ward and perform routine newborn examinations in preparation for discharge. • Participate in the supervision, support and teaching of Junior Medical Officers, Medical Students, Nursing and Allied Health staff.



• Coordinating and documenting the admission, management and discharge plan of patients seen in or admitted to the paediatric and neonatal service at Wollongong Hospital. • The day-to-day assessment and management of newborns in the Neonatal Unit, Birthing Unit and Maternity Ward. • Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate, then arranging discharge and liaising with local Medical Officers and other community based care modalities. • Communicate patient-relevant information in a timely and transparent manner to patients and their families / carers and all staff involved in the patient's care, to facilitate shared decision-making and timely information transfer. • Ensure accurate documentation in relation to patient care, whilst maintaining confidentiality and privacy, to ensure timely and efficient communication. • Compliance with ISLHD's OH&S; requirements, Code of Conduct and core competency standards. • Other duties as required, relevant to the classification. KEY CHALLENGES • Working in a complex environment where there are competing priorities and strict deadlines. • Formulating a management plan for every patient with consultation from more Senior doctors. • Ensuring appropriate investigations are ordered and followed up and the management plan updated.
