Job Description
About Brokerage & Co:
n
Brokerage & Co is a well-established brokerage firm known for its client-first approach, deep market expertise, and solid professional network. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional outcomes for our clients while fostering a high-performance, collaborative culture for our people.
n
The role:
n
The Head of Credit is a newly created role, central to Brokerage & Co's next phase of high growth. The successful candidate will build the credit platform - the policies, processes, resources, and tools - that will underpin how the business assesses and structures lending as it scales. Alongside this platform-building mandate, the role is a hands-on specialist position that combines direct ownership of the business's most complex, nuanced credit files with responsibility for lifting credit capability across the wider team.
n
This is not a purely management role - the Head of Credit remains a practising expert, personally structuring and resolving the scenarios that require the most experience, judgement, and sensitivity. The role is also client-facing, maintaining clear, high-quality communication with clients through complex or sensitive stages of their lending journey, and coaches Credit Assessors and Brokers so that complex scenarios are structured well the first time.
n
Through platform-building, hands-on file work, client engagement, and coaching, the Head of Credit drives stronger credit outcomes, higher first-time-right submission rates, and a culture of continuous learning and strong credit judgement across the business.
n
Key Responsibilities:
n
Complex Credit Assessment & Specialist Expertise
n
n
- Personally assess, structure and manage the business's most complex, nuanced credit files - including scenarios involving unusual structures, sensitive client circumstances, or significant judgement calls - that require specialist expertise.
n
- Take direct carriage of complex files from initial assessment through to lender submission and settlement, rather than operating purely in an oversight or coaching capacity.
n
- Maintain deep, current, hands-on credit expertise by staying close to live files and evolving lending scenarios.
n
- Bring judgement and discretion to sensitive credit scenarios where client circumstances, reputational considerations, or lender relationships require careful handling.
n
n
Develop the Brokerage & Co Credit Platform: Coaching & Training:
n
n
- Coach and develop Credit Assessors and Brokers to improve technical credit knowledge and capability.
n
- Develop Credit Assessors' ability to independently analyse, structure and solve increasingly complex lending scenarios.
n
- Strengthen Brokers' understanding of lender policy, servicing and credit fundamentals.
n
- Provide coaching following declines, escalations, excessive lender conditions or difficult applications.
n
- Run regular credit training sessions using real scenarios and case studies.
n
- Keep the team informed of relevant lender policy changes and translate these into practical lending opportunities.
n
- Work closely with Brokers and Credit Assessors to improve communication and reduce unnecessary back-and-forth.
n
- Promote a culture of continuous learning, accountability and strong credit judgement.
n
- Lead the design and build-out of Brokerage & Co's credit platform - the policies, processes, tools and resources that underpin how the business assesses and structures lending.
n
- Develop and maintain internal credit resources, scenario guides and best-practice processes as core components of the platform.
n
- Establish scalable credit standards and ways of working that support the business as file volume and complexity grow.
n
- Partner with the Head of Operations on the technology and tools that support credit assessment and workflow.
n
n
Lending Guidance, Escalation & Quality Assurance:
n
n
- Provide guidance on complex lending scenarios, policy interpretation and deal structuring.
n
- Support the team with lender selection, servicing, income assessment and credit strategy.
n
- Act as an escalation point for difficult credit scenarios while building the team's ability to solve future scenarios independently.
n
- Review complex files and provide feedback before, during and after submission.
n
- Improve application quality and increase first-time-right submissions.
n
- Identify recurring credit errors, knowledge gaps and process issues across the team.
n
- Monitor credit quality and use trends, errors and outcomes to determine future coaching and training priorities.
n
n
Client Communication & Experience:
n
n
- Act as a client-facing point of contact on complex or sensitive files, engaging directly with clients where specialist credit expertise is required.
n
- Maintain clear, qualified, and high-quality communication with clients throughout the assessment, structuring, and submission process.
n
- Keep clients well informed at key milestones, managing expectations and reducing uncertainty during complex or longer-running lending scenarios.
n
- Partner with Brokers to ensure consistent messaging and a seamless client experience whenever the Head of Credit is engaged directly.
n
n
Qualifications & Experience
n
n
- 7+ years' experience in credit assessment or credit management within mortgage broking or financial services.
n
- Demonstrated experience structuring and resolving complex residential lending scenarios across multiple lenders.
n
- Experience coaching, training, or leading credit or lending staff, with a track record of lifting team capability.
n
- Experience building or scaling credit policy, processes, or resources within a broking or lending business.
n
- Deep working knowledge of lender policy, servicing calculators, and the residential lending regulatory environment in Australia.
n
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in finance, business, or a related discipline highly regarded.
n
- Relevant industry licences and accreditations (or eligibility to obtain them).
n
n
Skills & Attributes
n
n
- Exceptional technical credit knowledge, with sound judgement across complex, sensitive, and ambiguous lending scenarios.
n
- Genuinely hands-on - motivated by working complex files directly, not just overseeing others' work.
n
- Strong coaching and mentoring ability, with the patience and communication skills to build capability in others.
n
- Confident, clear communicator with clients - able to explain complex credit outcomes and next steps in plain, reassuring terms.
n
- Comfortable building things from the ground up - policy, process, and resources - not just operating within an existing framework.
n
- Comfortable acting as a calm, authoritative escalation point under pressure.
n
- Data-driven - able to spot patterns in errors, declines, and outcomes and turn them into targeted coaching and process improvements.
n
- Collaborative and approachable, building strong working relationships across Brokers and Credit Assessors.
n
- High personal integrity and a strong commitment to responsible lending and compliant credit practice.
n
n
Remuneration
n
A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate, including base salary, superannuation, and performance-based incentives.
