The opportunity
We are looking for a Casual Trainee Dental Assistant to join our friendly Dental team in Wagga Wagga.
This is an excellent prospect for someone who is interested in building a career in dental assisting and would like to learn on the job in a supportive clinical environment.
You do not need previous dental assisting experience. Full training will be provided to the successful applicant, with the opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge while working alongside experienced dental professionals.
The role will involve supporting our dentists and dental team with the day-to-day operation of the dental clinic and providing a welcoming and professional experience for patients.

Riverina Medical and Dental Aboriginal Corporation (RivMed) is a long-established Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation in the heart of Wiradjuri Country.
RivMed works to effect change in the most marginalised and vulnerable people in our community. We work to achieve this through the provision of culturally appropriate medical and well-being services for Aboriginal people and their families.
What you'll learn and do
Working under the direction of the Dentist and supervision of the Dental Co-Ordinator or an experienced team member, you will progressively learn to:
- Prepare dental surgeries, instruments, materials and equipment.
- Assist the Dentist and other oral health practitioners during dental treatments.
- Prepare and support patients during their dental visits.
- Learn chairside assisting, including passing instruments and operating suction.
- Prepare dental materials and equipment as your skills develop.
- Clean and reset treatment rooms between patients.
- Learn how to safely clean, package, sterilise, store and trace dental instruments.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Maintain sterilisation and clinical records.
- Restock dental surgeries and monitor supplies.
- Assist with the care and basic checking of dental equipment.
- Support patients and families in a friendly, respectful and culturally safe manner.
- Assist with appointments, patient records, telephone enquiries and reception duties when required.
- Support oral health promotion activities and community events.
- Participate in workplace training, supervision and competency assessments.
- Work as part of a supportive team of Dentists, Dental Assistants, reception staff and other RivMed employees.

- Available to work weekdays and Saturdays as required.
About you (Selection criteria)
We are looking for someone who:
- Is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and has a connection with community.
This is an identified Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander position and applicantss will be required to provide confirmation of Aboriginality acceptable to RivMed with their application . (NB: race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
- Has a genuine interest in dental assisting and improving oral health outcomes.
- Is enthusiastic about learning and developing new skills.
- Is reliable, punctual and able to work approximately three days per week, depending on clinic requirements.
- Can communicate respectfully with patients, families and colleagues.
- Is comfortable asking questions and following instructions.
- Works well as part of a team.
- Understands the importance of privacy and confidentiality.
- Is committed to infection prevention, workplace safety and culturally safe care.
- Has basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills and is willing to undertake further training.
