Director - Economics

Location: Brisbane, QLD The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) is the peak industry association for the Queensland resources sector, representing companies across the coal, minerals, energy, gas, and exploration industries. QRC works closely with government, industry, and communities to promote sustainable economic growth, industry leadership, and responsible resource development, while supporting employment, regional prosperity, and Queensland’s long-term competitiveness.

The Director of Economics plays a pivotal role in shaping economic policy and advocacy for QRC. This position is instrumental in achieving the council's primary objective: fostering the long-term viability of Queensland's coal, minerals and energy sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Economics will:

- Lead the development of economic insights, modelling and analysis to support QRC's advocacy and policy agenda.
- Represent QRC at industry conferences, executive forums, government briefings and public events as a credible industry spokesperson.
- Communicate complex economic and policy issues clearly and persuasively to a broad range of audiences.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, industry leaders, member companies and key stakeholders.
- Produce comprehensive economic reports, industry outlooks,



forecasts and submissions on issues impacting Queensland's resources sector.
- Analyse the impacts of taxation, royalties, regulatory reform and government policy on industry competitiveness and investment.
- Monitor economic trends in commodity markets to identify emerging risks and opportunities for the resources sector.
- Develop evidence-based policy positions and advocacy strategies that inform and influence government decision-making.

Candidate requirements

- Demonstrated ability to operate as a trusted internal adviser to executive leadership and the QRC Board and committees.
- Exceptional external stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence senior executives, government representatives and industry leaders in public-facing forums.
- Tertiary qualifications in Economics or a related discipline, with postgraduate studies in policy, public policy or management highly regarded.
- Economic modelling, research and analytical capability, with the ability to derive insights from complex datasets.
- Commercial acumen and an understanding of the drivers of productivity, competitiveness, investment and business performance.
- Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex economic issues for diverse audiences.
- Strong influential capability, combining strategic thinking, independence of thought and a team-oriented approach.
