As an EL1 Accountant or Finance Officer, you will play a vital role in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial operations within a prominent government agency. This is a 12-month on-site contract based in Canberra, providing a unique opportunity to utilise your financial expertise in a complex, dynamic environment while contributing to the protection of Australia's national interests. Your skills will support strategic decision-making and uphold the organisation's compliance with legislative and policy standards.
Required Skills
- Minimum three years of experience in a complex financial environment
- Strong expertise in financial accounting processes, end-of-month and year-end reporting
- Proven ability to perform financial reconciliations and manage external budgets
- Excellent analytical skills with the capacity to interpret financial data and provide sound advice
- Ability to prepare high-quality financial reports and deliver clear communications to senior stakeholders
- Demonstrated understanding of legislative and policy requirements related to finance and accounting
Nice to Have Skills
- Experience with Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) and PGPA Act requirements
- Knowledge of ERP systems, Excel, and standard operating systems
- CPA or CA qualification, or near-completion of these qualifications
- Prior experience working with audit agencies such as the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO)
Preferred Education and Experience
- Tertiary qualification in accounting, finance, or a related discipline
- At least five years of practical experience working within a public sector or similar complex financial workplace

- Flexibility to respond to evolving organisational priorities
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively across internal teams and external agencies
