Finance & Accounts Manager – Commercial Construction Company
About the Role
We are a growing construction company operating across two key divisions — Fit Out and Large Projects.
We are looking for an experienced Finance & Accounts Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day financial operations across the entire business.
This is a hands-on management role. You will oversee our existing accounts team, ensure projects are being accurately and fully invoiced, drive outstanding debtor collections, reconcile project financials and provide management with clear visibility over the company's financial position.
You will also work closely with our external accountant on higher-level financial matters, ensuring the business's accounts, reporting and financial processes are accurate, timely and well managed.
This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys being across the whole business, rather than sitting within one narrow accounting function.
Key Responsibilities
- Finance & Accounts Managements
- Invoicing & Revenue
- Accounts Receivable & Debtors
- Project Financial Reconciliation
- Accounts Payable & General Accounting
- Financial Reporting & Management
- External Accountant & Compliance
What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who is organized and hands-on.
You will ideally have
- 5+ years' experience in accounting/finance, ideally within construction, building, property or a project-based business
- Experience managing or overseeing an accounts team
- Strong understanding of project/job accounting
- Experience with invoicing, WIP, reconciliations and accounts receivable
- Strong understanding of construction invoicing and variations
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong communication skills
- The confidence to chase people and hold others accountable
- Ability to work with Project Managers, Directors, suppliers, clients and external accountants
- Solid Excel and accounting software skills are essential,
particularly with Xero. Experience with Cheops would be highly regarded, although it is not essential.
- A proactive approach — you don't wait for someone to tell you that something is wrong
- Ability to see the big picture while still getting into the detail
CPA/CA qualification would be viewed favorably but is not essential if the candidate has strong practical construction finance experience. The Person We're Looking For The right person will be someone who naturally thinks:
“Are we getting paid? Has everything been invoiced? Does this job reconcile? Are the numbers right? What needs attention?”
You will be comfortable getting into the detail when required, but also able to step back and give the Directors a clear picture of how the business is performing.
You will be commercially minded rather than purely transactional.
We're looking for someone who will take ownership of the finance function, identify issues before they become problems and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
Key Performance Indicators
Success in this role will be measured by:
- 100% of completed/billable works invoiced promptly
- Reduction in unbilled WIP
- Reduction in overdue debtors
- Accurate and timely project reconciliations
- Projects financially closed out promptly
- Accurate project profitability reporting
- Timely month-end reporting
- Accurate AP/AR and reconciliations
- Improved cash-flow visibility
- Strong performance and accountability across the accounts team
- Minimal financial surprises for management
Why Join Us? This is an opportunity to take ownership of the finance function within a successful and growing construction business.
You won't be just another accountant processing invoices. You will have visibility across the entire business, work directly with the Directors and Project Teams, manage an existing accounts team and play an important role in improving the financial performance and systems of the company.
