Welder (First Class)
Location: Port Hedland, Western Australia
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: AUD $75,000 - $85,000 per annum

Our client, Martu Waru Pty Ltd, is a proudly Indigenous-led Western Australian company providing building, construction, maintenance, civil, fabrication and electrical services across metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia.
Due to continued growth, our client is seeking an experienced and motivated Welder (First Class) to join their team in Port Hedland, Western Australia.
About the Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out welding, metal fabrication, assembly, repair and finishing work across construction, maintenance and other projects in the Pilbara and regional Western Australia. The role requires strong technical skills, precision, quality workmanship and a commitment to safe and efficient work practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret engineering drawings, plans, specifications and work instructions to determine welding requirements, materials, dimensions and appropriate fabrication methods.
- Select, inspect and prepare metal materials and components for welding and fabrication.
- Measure, mark and cut metal sections, plates, pipes and other components using suitable hand tools, cutting equipment and machinery.
- Shape, bend and form metal sections and pipes using appropriate hand and machine tools, including heating and hammering techniques where required.
- Accurately position, align and secure components using measuring instruments, clamps, jigs and other appropriate equipment.
- Join metal components using suitable welding processes, as well as bolting, riveting and other approved joining methods.
- Set up and safely operate welding machines, cutting equipment, grinders and other fabrication tools.
- Inspect completed welds for quality, penetration, consistency, alignment and compliance with project specifications.
- Grind, file, chisel and smooth welds and metal surfaces to achieve the required finish.
- Clean, polish and finish fabricated components using appropriate methods and equipment.
- Carry out welding repairs, modifications and maintenance to existing metal structures, machinery and components.
- Conduct visual inspections and measurements of completed work to ensure required dimensions, tolerances and finishes are achieved.
- Safely handle, store and transport welding equipment, gas cylinders, metal materials and fabricated components.
- Maintain welding equipment, tools and work areas in a protected and serviceable condition.
- Work collaboratively with supervisors, tradespeople, clients and other project personnel.
- Complete required job documentation and maintain accurate work records.
- Ensure all work is undertaken safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant standards, specifications and workplace procedures.
Essential Requirements
- Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (MEM31922) or equivalent relevant trade qualification.
- At least three years of relevant welding and fabrication experience.
- Current Construction White Card.
- Current Australian Driver's Licence, with Manual preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in welding, metal fabrication, cutting, shaping and assembly.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, plans and technical specifications.
- Ability to safely operate welding, cutting, grinding and metal fabrication equipment.
- Strong understanding of welding safety, procedures and quality requirements.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screening.
- National Police Clearance or willingness to obtain one.
- Solid commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Working at Heights certification.
- Confined Space certification.
- Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Licence.
- First Aid Certificate.
- HR Driver's Licence.
- Relevant welding tickets or qualifications for specific welding processes.
- Experience with structural steel, pipework, heavy fabrication or maintenance welding.
- Previous experience working on mining, government, commercial or remote construction projects.
This position is open to Australian citizens, permanent residents and candidates who are currently onshore in Australia with valid work rights.
