The Story

This is an opportunity to join the technology team of a leading healthcare organisation, supporting a large and highly distributed enterprise setting.

Technology plays a critical role in keeping the organisation connected and operational, with the network environment supporting everything from data centre and cloud infrastructure through to WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi and secure remote access.

The organisation is currently undertaking a number of significant network initiatives while also working through a broader program of network remediation and continuous improvement.

It’s an environment where reliability matters, but so does having the technical expertise and initiative to look beyond the immediate issue and drive longer-term improvements.

The Role

As the Senior Network Engineer, you’ll join an established network team and act as a senior escalation point, working across both BAU network operations and project delivery.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys variety. One day you may be troubleshooting a complex network issue or analysing packet captures, and the next you could be involved in network design, implementation, firewall work or driving a remediation activity through to completion.

A key focus of the role will be bringing a proactive engineering mindset to the environment. The team has a backlog of tactical network fixes and areas of inconsistency, so they’re looking for someone who can identify underlying issues, determine the right solution and take ownership of driving improvements rather than simply responding to incidents as they arise.

Some of the key areas you’ll be involved in include:

- Providing senior-level escalation and technical support across the network environment.
- Troubleshooting complex network incidents through to root cause and implementing both tactical and strategic fixes.

- Supporting network design, implementation and operational acceptance.
- Contributing to current network and firewall projects, including data centre and firewall redesign activities.
- Working across Cisco and Palo Alto technologies within a large enterprise environment.
- Monitoring network performance and identifying opportunities for optimisation and improvement.
- Supporting LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, firewalls and secure network services.
- Working closely with internal teams, vendors and business stakeholders.
- Participating in incident, change and problem management processes within an enterprise ITIL environment.
- Sharing knowledge and helping uplift the capability of the broader network team.
- Contributing to a significant backlog of network remediation and continuous improvement activities.

The role is 12 months, with potential for extension beyond the initial contract. The client is looking for someone who can start as soon as practical. The role is hybrid, requiring three days per week in the office initially, with the potential to reduce to 2 days once familiarity with the setting has been established.

What You Bring To The Role

You're an experienced Network Engineer comfortable operating at a senior level within a complex enterprise workplace. You have strong technical fundamentals, are confident troubleshooting complex issues and, importantly, have the initiative to identify problems and drive them through to resolution.

We’re looking for

- Strong enterprise network engineering experience across LAN and WAN environments.
- Deep hands-on experience with Cisco and Palo Alto technologies.
- Strong understanding of networking protocols and concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, ARP, LACP, Spanning Tree, BGP, OSPF and SD-WAN.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills, including packet capture analysis and root-cause investigation.
- Experience across firewalls, switching, wireless networking and enterprise network infrastructure.
- Experience working with Wi-Fi environments, including WLC/WAP technologies and associated protocols.
- A working understanding of Microsoft Active Directory and AD services, particularly how these integrate with enterprise networking.
- Experience working within ITIL-based environments, including incident, change and problem management.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical teams, vendors and stakeholders.
- The ability to work independently, take ownership and proactively identify opportunities to improve the environment.

Experience with Juniper, Extreme Networks, Fortinet and/or cloud networking across Azure or AWS would also be valuable. Most importantly, you’ll be someone who can operate as a steady senior technical presence within the team; someone who doesn’t just fix what’s broken, but looks at what went wrong initially, and what can be done to prevent it happening again.

Next Steps

If you’re a Senior Network Engineer, happy in a contract daily-rate role, where you can get involved in both major network initiatives and hands-on engineering, we’d love to hear from you.

Apply now or get in touch for a confidential conversation to find out more about the opportunity.
