Skilling Queenslanders for Work: Lead Facilitator-Mentor

Fulltime position

Based in Cairns, QLD

We are seeking an experienced mentor and facilitator to deliver Core Skills for Work and Soft skills education to trainees with disability. NJL is looking for a highly motivated person to join our existing team to support our trainees to choose lives they wish to lead.

You are a passionate mentor with belief in the potential of every individual. You understand the impact that disability, trauma and adverse experiences have on a person's confidence and employment journey. Through empathy, patience and professionalism, you create a safe setting where participants feel respected, heard, and supported to achieve their goals and can facilitate inclusive learning.

You are skilled at balancing encouragement with accountability, adapting your communication style to meet individual needs and helping participants build the confidence and capabilities required for success in training, education, and employment.

You will be supported to further delve into and develop our program in line with NJL’s trauma informed framework, work with people one on one to develop work readiness skills and organise and facilitate group activities to develop interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Key responsibilities:

- Provide strengths-based mentoring to trainees with disability, mental health challenges, complex trauma and other barriers to employment.

- Apply trauma-informed principles to create a safe, supportive and culturally responsive learning environment.

- Build trusting relationships that support participant wellbeing, engagement, resilience, and progression towards employment outcomes.

- Adapt workshops, learning materials, and activities to accommodate diverse learning styles, accessibility requirements, and individual support needs.

- Engage and Collaborate with community organisations for work experience, observation and employment opportunities.

- Recognise participant distress,



use co-regulation practices and escalate concerns in line with organisational policies and safeguarding requirements.

- Encourage self-advocacy, independence and personal development through person-centred mentoring and goal setting.

- Support participants to develop emotional regulation, communication, workplace readiness, social skills, and self-awareness in group environments.

To be considered for the position, you will need to have:

- Demonstrated experience working with diversity, disability and or complex trauma, including participants with psychosocial, intellectual, physical, or neurodiverse support needs.

- Experience applying trauma-informed framework in employment, training, education, community services, youth work, disability services or related sectors.

- Excel at establishing rapport and ability to manage challenging behaviours in a respectful, professional, and supportive manner.

- Knowledge of inclusive learning principles and reasonable adjustments in education and workplace environments.

- Certificate IV or higher qualification in Community Services, Disability, Youth Work, Mental Health, Training and Assessment, or a related field is highly desirable.

- Facilitator experience in delivering Core Skills for Work and Soft skills to disadvantaged students

- Excellent observation, communication and interpersonal skills

- Ability to work autonomously and with initiative

- C class driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle

- Current First Aid and CPR

- Excellent time management skills to balance administration with participant engagement





- Work well in a small team to build creative solutions and achieve combined KPI’s

- Sound digital literacy skills utilising different software platforms for reporting as well as Microsoft 365 (Word/Excel & Outlook)
