Lotus Legal
Rockingham
The lawyers get the thank-you card. You are the reason the file was ready.
You know how this works. The client thinks the lawyer pulled off a miracle. What actually happened is that you had the file ready a week early, chased the certificate nobody else remembered, diarised the date before it became a deadline, and quietly kept the whole matter moving while everyone else was in meetings. The miracle was a tidy file with your fingerprints all over it and someone else's name on the letterhead.
If you are properly good at this job, you already know the difference between a calm file and a crisis is almost never the law. It is the care. Care is exactly what we are hiring for.
The job
Legal Assistant at Lotus Legal, full-time and permanent, based in our Rockingham office.
Lotus Legal is a family-owned boutique firm with offices in Rockingham, Balcatta and Northam. We help everyday people through life's biggest legal decisions, with fixed fees and plain English advice that clients actually understand and tell their friends about. We are growing, and this role exists because our files deserve more hands on them, not because someone left.
You will support our lawyers across estate planning, deceased estates and estate litigation. Preparing wills, EPAs and EPGs for signing. Probate applications and estate administration. Litigation support: court documents, briefs, correspondence and the dates that must never be missed. Everything runs in LEAP, and one of the most valuable things you will do is keep every file so current that any lawyer can open it and know in thirty seconds exactly where the matter is at. In a firm like ours, that is not admin. That is the machinery of the whole practice.
This role is in Rockingham. Read this before you scroll past.
If you live south of the river, you have probably spent years commuting past better versions of your life to get to a city firm that treats you as interchangeable. This is $75,000 to $85,000 plus super, ten minutes from home, free parking, and a team building something worth being part of. Stop giving two hours commute a day to someone who has never once noticed what you actually do.
What this actually looks like
Monday morning you open LEAP, scan your matters, and spot a probate requisition due next week that nobody has flagged. You pull the file together and put it in front of the lawyer with a note before they have finished their coffee. Nobody asked you to. You saw it and handled it, because a limitation date is not something you wait to be told about.
Mid-morning a woman calls whose husband died three weeks ago. She has never dealt with a lawyer, she does not know what probate is, and she is barely holding it together. You slow down. You give her ten unhurried minutes, no jargon, no script, and by the end of the call she knows what happens next and feels like she rang the right place. That call is the reason this work matters, and the person we hire will feel that rather than just know it.
After lunch, a litigation client rings. He is angry, it is not really about you, and you do not take the bait or take it personally. You stay calm, get the facts down accurately, and the lawyer walks into the return call fully briefed instead of blind. By Friday, every file is up to date, every lawyer knows where their matters stand, next week is already mapped, and you leave on time.
The money
$75,000 to $85,000 plus super, depending on experience. The advertised average for legal assistants in Perth sits in the low-to-mid $60,000s. We are paying above that deliberately, because we are not looking for an average legal assistant, and we would rather pay properly for one exceptional person than burn through three average ones. There are no timesheets and no units here. You are measured by the state of your files and the experience of the clients, not by six-minute increments.
What comes with it
Full-time, permanent, Monday to Friday with versatile start and finish times built around your actual life. Free parking. A team that has events together because they genuinely like each other, not because HR made them. Corporate massage every fortnight. Birthday and anniversary recognition. A social impact program you can be part of — the firm backs the Salvos and Rotary and is involved in homeless outreach, tree plantings and beach cleanups. And genuine growth as the firm scales, because we are building this now and the person in this seat grows with it.
Who we are looking for
Someone with at least two years' experience as a legal assistant, with real exposure to estate planning, deceased estates and litigation. You know your way around a probate application, a will signing appointment and a court timetable,
and if you have worked in LEAP or similar, even better.
Someone who takes care. You check the date twice. You proofread the letter before it goes out. You would rather ask one sharp question early than fix a mess later, and it genuinely bothers you when something leaves the office not quite right.
Someone with initiative. You see what needs doing and you do it. You do not need a task list every morning or instructions fed to you a spoonful at a time, and you have never once said 'nobody told me to' about something you could plainly see. And when something needs doing that is not strictly yours — a colleague is snowed under, a client is waiting in reception, the kitchen needs restocking before a meeting — you just quietly handle it, because helping the team out has never needed to appear in your job description first.
Someone who is good with people. Our clients are often grieving, stressed or in dispute, and they need someone warm, calm and compassionate on the other end of the phone. And when a client is difficult, you can hold your ground without losing your composure or your kindness.
Someone who works well under pressure and is hard working. When five things need your attention at once, you can tell which one matters most, and the lawyers never have to wonder where a file is at because you have already told them. Most days you will leave on time, because the office is built to run that way — but on the rare day something genuinely urgent lands at ten to five, you are the person who stays to see it done rather than leave it half-finished overnight, because that is just who you are.
And someone who actually wants this job. Not a job. This one. The kind of person who read the Monday-to-Friday section above and thought 'finally, someone actually described what I do.'
How to apply
Send your resume and a cover letter to *******@lotus-legal.com.au or apply through Seek. In your cover letter, do not just list your experience. Tell us about one of two things: a time you caught a problem on a file before it became one, or a time a client was having the worst week of their life and you made it a little easier. If you cannot think of either, this probably is not your role. If your problem is choosing which story to tell, you are exactly who we are looking for.
Every application is treated in strict confidence, because we know many of the people reading this are currently employed. Applications are being reviewed now and we will move quickly on the right person.
