The primary purpose of military communications and information systems (CIS) is to serve the military commander. In this role, CIS allows the commander to exert personal influence by exercising command and control (C2) of a larger force in a more widely dispersed area than would otherwise be possible. The secondary purpose of military CIS is to provide a mechanism to expeditiously transfer information securely, rapidly and reliably between individuals and groups of individuals. Therefore, a robust CIS infrastructure is essential to provide communications in support of operations, intelligence, logistics, administration, defensive and offensive information warfare.

The role of military CIS is the primary responsibility of a Communications Warfare Specialist (CWS). You will be a highly trained, experienced skilled responsible for the effective management, planning, coordinating and execution of the operation of the Electro-magnetic Spectrum,



radio systems, satellite networks, cyber-security and Information Technology (IT) capabilities, as well as Operational Fleet Management, which incorporates tactical ship-ship communications to coordinate the exchange of information. These roles require innovation, creativity and an inquisitive nature to enable assured Command, Control and Communications (C3).

CWS personnel are also trained and experienced in boarding operations, underway replenishment, general boat operations and other core mariner skills. There is a wide range of activities that CWS are involved in alongside other trades and professionals, each forming part of a team to utilise the organisation's expertise, where it is needed most.
