ENGINEERING MANAGER – STRUCTURAL AND FORENSIC ENGINEERING

Strength Engineering is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager – Structural and Forensic Engineering to lead our engineering team and oversee the technical delivery of structural, forensic and remedial engineering projects.

This is a senior leadership position for a Registered Professional Engineer who combines strong structural engineering capability, forensic investigation experience and excellent people leadership.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining technical standards, developing our engineering team and supporting the continued growth of Strength Engineering.

About the Role:

As Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for the technical and operational performance of the engineering team, including:

- Leading, mentoring and developing structural and civil engineers.
- Managing engineering workloads, priorities and project allocation.
- Reviewing and approving engineering calculations, reports, drawings and technical documentation.
- Undertaking and overseeing structural and civil engineering designs for proposed low-rise residential and commercial construction.
- Providing senior technical input on complex structural, forensic and remedial engineering matters.
- Undertaking and overseeing forensic investigations into structural movement, cracking, deterioration, failures and building defects.
- Reviewing proposed rectification methodologies and remedial structural designs.
- Maintaining engineering quality assurance and internal review processes.
- Supporting engineers with technical decisions, investigations and problem solving.
- Ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, professionally and within agreed timeframes.
- Managing technical risk and ensuring engineering recommendations are practical, defensible and appropriately documented.
- Supporting preparation of engineering scopes, fee proposals and project methodologies.
- Liaising with clients, builders, architects, building surveyors, project managers, insurers and other consultants.
- Improving engineering procedures, templates, systems and technical standards.
- Assisting with recruitment, resourcing and ongoing development of the engineering team.
- Working closely with the Directors on technical strategy and the continued growth of the business.

Applicants must have:

- Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or equivalent.
- More than 7 years of relevant structural engineering experience within Australia.




- Current registration as a Professional Engineer in Victoria in the relevant area of engineering.
- Strong Australian structural engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience in forensic structural engineering and building defect investigations .
- Experience assessing structural cracking, movement, settlement, deterioration and structural failures.
- Strong knowledge of existing buildings, structural systems and construction methods.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing structural calculations, engineering drawings and technical reports.
- Excellent leadership, communication and people management skills.
- Proven experience leading, mentoring or managing engineers.
- Strong technical judgement and practical problem-solving capability.
- Excellent written communication and report-writing skills.
- Ability to manage multiple engineers, projects and competing priorities.
- Solid understanding of professional engineering responsibilities, technical risk and quality assurance.

The successful candidate should have strong working knowledge of relevant Australian legislation, codes and standards, including where applicable:

- National Construction Code (NCC)
- AS 4100 – Steel structures
- AS 1720.1 – Timber structures
- AS 2870 – Residential slabs and footings
- AS 3700 – Masonry structures
- AS 1684 series – Residential timber-framed construction
- AS/NZS 4600 – Cold-formed steel structures
- AS 2159 – Piling – Design and installation
- AS 4678 – Earth-retaining structures
- AS 4349 series – Inspection of buildings
- Relevant Victorian Building Regulations and professional engineering requirements.

Experience with common structural engineering and documentation software is expected. Relevant experience may include:

- SpaceGass
- RAPT
- Structural Toolkit
- RAM Concept or similar structural analysis software
- AutoCAD
- Clearcalcs
- Microsoft 365, including Word and Excel
- Engineering calculation and reporting systems
- Project management and workflow management software

We are looking for an experienced engineer who can lead from the front.

You will need to be capable of moving between technical engineering, forensic investigation, team leadership and project delivery .

You should be able to:





- Make confident and defensible engineering decisions.
- Challenge technical assumptions where required.
- Identify the underlying cause of structural defects rather than simply treating the visible symptoms.
- Clearly communicate complex engineering matters to clients and non-engineers.
- Develop younger engineers and improve their technical capability.
- Maintain accountability and high technical standards across the team.
- Stay calm and decisive when dealing with complex projects or competing priorities.
- Understand when additional investigation, testing or specialist input is required.
- Balance engineering conservatism with practical and commercially sensible solutions.

Above all, you must have excellent leadership skills and be capable of building a technically strong, accountable and supportive engineering team.
