Position Purpose
SARAO PAINTING PTY LTD requires a skilled Painter to undertake the preparation, treatment, painting, decorating and finishing of internal and external building surfaces across the company’s painting projects.
The position involves responsibility for the complete painting process, commencing with assessment and preparation of surfaces and progressing through product selection, paint preparation, application, detailed finishing, defect rectification and final inspection. The Painter is expected to consistently achieve a professional and durable finish while working efficiently within project schedules and maintaining the workmanship standards expected by SARAO PAINTING PTY LTD.
The role requires sound trade knowledge, careful attention to surface condition and coating compatibility, competent use of painting tools and equipment and the ability to undertake work safely across changing project environments.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Painter will be responsible for:
1. Inspecting and assessing surfaces prior to painting, including walls, ceilings, doors, windows, trims, plasterboard, timber, masonry and other building surfaces, to identify deterioration, defects, existing coatings and the preparation necessary to achieve an appropriate finished result.
2. Preparing internal and external surfaces for painting by cleaning, washing, scraping, sanding and stripping existing coatings, removing loose or deteriorated material, filling cracks and holes, repairing minor surface imperfections and applying sealers or other preparatory treatments where required.
3. Selecting, preparing and mixing paints and coating materials including primers, undercoats, enamels, acrylics, stains, varnishes and protective finishes, having regard to the surface substrate, project requirements, manufacturer specifications, environmental conditions, colour schedules and required appearance.
4. Applying paints and protective or decorative coatings using brushes, rollers, spray equipment and other appropriate trade techniques, including completing primers, undercoats and successive finishing coats while maintaining appropriate coverage, thickness, drying intervals and consistency throughout the work.
5. Performing detailed painting and finishing work including cutting-in around ceilings, cornices, doors, windows, architraves, skirting boards and fixtures, staining or varnishing suitable surfaces and completing other decorative finishing work required to provide a clean and professional appearance.
6. Reading and following project instructions, plans, colour schedules and product specifications, calculating paint and material requirements,
organising required equipment and materials and coordinating assigned work so that painting activities are completed efficiently and unnecessary material wastage is minimised.
7. Inspecting work during and following application to assess colour consistency, coating coverage, texture and overall finish, identifying runs, marks, uneven coverage, visible surface defects or other imperfections and carrying out sanding, touch-ups, recoating and other rectification work where necessary.
8. Setting up, operating and maintaining painting tools and access equipment, including brushes, rollers, spray equipment, power tools, ladders, trestles and approved mobile access equipment, while ensuring equipment is used appropriately, cleaned after use and maintained in safe working condition.
9. Coordinating painting activities with the Director, supervisors, other workers and trades on project sites, appropriately sequencing work, protecting adjoining surfaces, fixtures and completed areas and ensuring painting activities do not unnecessarily damage or interfere with other project works.
10. Maintaining safe, clean and professional worksites by using appropriate personal protective equipment, safely handling and storing paints, solvents and other materials, controlling spills and waste, observing working-at-height and manual-handling requirements, cleaning the work area following completion and complying with SARAO PAINTING PTY LTD's workplace health and safety procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will generally be expected to possess:
1. AQF Certificate III in Painting and Decorating or above/relevant equivalent trade qualification; or relevant industry experience sufficient to demonstrate the required painting trade competencies where applicable;
2. practical experience performing professional painting and decorating work;
3. demonstrated experience in surface preparation, repairs, priming, painting and finishing;
4. practical experience using brushes, rollers, power tools and painting equipment;
5. familiarity with different paints, primers, sealers, stains, varnishes and coating systems;
6. knowledge of appropriate preparation methods for different building surfaces; and
7. relevant construction-industry licences, cards or safety credentials required for the duties and project sites concerned.
Essential Skills and Competencies
The Painter is required to demonstrate:
1. strong practical painting and surface-preparation skills;
2. sound understanding of paint systems, surface compatibility and application techniques;
3. ability to identify surface defects and determine appropriate preparation methods;
4. ability to mix, match and apply paints accurately and consistently;
5.
high attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship;
6. competence in producing clean edges, consistent coverage and professional finishes;
7. ability to read and follow specifications, colour schedules and work instructions;
8. effective time management and ability to complete assigned works within project schedules;
9. ability to work both independently and cooperatively with other personnel on site;
10. safe and responsible operation of painting tools, equipment and access equipment;
11. sound understanding of workplace health and safety obligations; and
12. ability to maintain an organised, clean and professional working environment.
Physical and Work Requirements
The position is site-based and requires the employee to undertake the normal physical activities associated with painting and decorating work. These may include standing for extended periods, bending, reaching, carrying materials and equipment, repetitive brush and roller application, working from ladders or approved access equipment and moving between different areas of a project site.
The Painter must be capable of performing these duties safely and complying with all applicable site requirements and secure work procedures.
Workplace Health and Safety
The Painter must comply with all workplace health and safety procedures adopted by SARAO PAINTING PTY LTD and any additional requirements applying at individual project sites.
The employee is expected to correctly use personal protective equipment, safely handle paints and associated substances, maintain clear and organised work areas, use ladders and access equipment appropriately and immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment or incidents to the relevant supervisor.
Quality and Performance Expectations
Performance in the position will be assessed principally against:
1. quality and consistency of completed painting work;
2. adequacy of surface preparation before coating;
3. accuracy of colour and product application;
4. standard of detailed cutting-in and finishing;
5. identification and rectification of defects;
6. appropriate use and control of painting materials;
7. productivity and completion of assigned work within project requirements;
8. care taken to protect surrounding surfaces and property;
9. condition and cleanliness of tools, equipment and work areas; and
10. adherence to safety requirements and company procedures.
Position Accountability
The Painter is responsible for carrying out substantive painting trade duties from initial surface preparation through to final coating, inspection and completion.
The position is not limited to general labouring or basic painting assistance. The employee is expected to exercise practical trade knowledge in assessing surfaces, selecting suitable preparation and application methods, using appropriate products and equipment, monitoring the quality of work and completing necessary rectification to ensure finished works meet the professional standards required by SARAO PAINTING PTY LTD.
