About the Role
We are looking for an experienced payments industry professional to join our business and take a leading role in the development, launch and ongoing operation of our payments offering.
This is a hands-on role for someone who has worked within the payments sector and understands how payment products operate in practice — from implementation and payment flows through to partners, cards, transaction accounts, compliance, fraud, disputes and ongoing operational management.
We are looking for an operator rather than someone who has only advised on payments from the outside.
The successful candidate will work closely with our management, technology, product and compliance teams, as well as external banking, payments and technology partners, to help build and operate a scalable payments capability.
About You
You will have significant experience working within the Australian payments, banking, fintech or card industry, ideally having been directly involved in launching or operating payment products.
You understand the complexity that sits behind a modern payments product and are comfortable working across multiple areas of the business.
Depending on your background, your experience may include:
- Transaction accounts and payment accounts
- Debit, prepaid or credit card programs
- Visa and/or Mastercard programs
- NPP and PayID
- Direct Entry
- BPAY
- Digital wallets
- Payment processing and transaction flows
- BIN sponsorship and card issuing
- Banking-as-a-Service or embedded finance
- Payment facilitators
- Fraud and transaction monitoring
- AML/CTF and customer onboarding
- Chargebacks and disputes
- Payment reconciliation and settlement
- Payment technology and API integrations
You don't necessarily need to be a specialist in every one of these areas.
What is important is that you have genuine operational payments experience and understand how the different components come together.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include responsibility for:
- Helping lead the implementation and launch of new payment products and capabilities.
- Managing relationships with external payment, banking, card issuing and technology partners.
- Developing and documenting payment processes and operational procedures.
- Understanding and managing end-to-end customer and funds flows.
- Working with technology teams on payment integrations, APIs and system requirements.
- Overseeing day-to-day payment operations once products are launched.
- Managing payment exceptions, failed transactions and operational issues.
- Overseeing transaction reconciliation and settlement processes.
- Developing processes for chargebacks, disputes, refunds and customer payment issues.
- Working with compliance teams to ensure appropriate AML/CTF, KYC and transaction monitoring processes are maintained.
- Assisting with fraud prevention, transaction monitoring and payment risk management.
- Monitoring transaction volumes, payment performance and operational KPIs.
- Identifying and resolving operational issues with payment partners and providers.
- Supporting the development of new payment functionality and products.
- Ensuring payment operations can scale as customer and transaction volumes increase.
- Working closely with senior management on the broader payments strategy and roadmap.
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate will have:
- Demonstrated professional experience within the payments industry.
- Experience working for a fintech, bank, payment provider, card issuer, payment processor, payment facilitator or similar organisation.
- Strong understanding of payment products, transaction flows and payment operations.
- Experience working with external banking or payment partners.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through complex operational issues.
- An understanding of the regulatory and compliance environment surrounding Australian payments.
- Strong project management and organisational capability.
- The ability to work across technology, product, compliance and commercial teams.
- Experience developing operational processes rather than simply working within established processes.
- A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to take ownership of problems through to resolution.
Experience helping launch a new payments product, fintech or card/account program from the ground up would be particularly highly regarded.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to join at an early stage and have a meaningful influence over how our payments capability is built.
Rather than stepping into a mature payments operation where every process has already been established, the successful candidate will have the prospect to help determine how the function operates, establish processes and controls, work directly with our partners and progressively build out the internal payments capability.
As the business grows, there will also be an opportunity for the successful candidate to build and lead a broader payments operations team.
We are therefore looking for someone who is equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves today and building the infrastructure and team required for tomorrow.
