The Derwent Sailing Squadron is looking for an enthusiastic and capable Sailing & Training Co-ordinator to join our team and help deliver one of Tasmania’s most active sailing and boating programs.

Located on the shores of the River Derwent in Hobart, the Squadron is one of Tasmania’s leading sailing clubs, supporting a diverse community of competitive sailors, recreational boaters, volunteers and people learning to sail.

This is a hands-on role for someone who knows sailing, enjoys working with people and wants to play an important part in delivering and growing sailing participation at the Squadron.

Reporting to our Membership & Community Manager, the Sailing & Training Co-ordinator will take day-to-day responsibility for coordinating the Squadron’s sailing and training programs, working closely with members, volunteers, race officials, instructors and the Sailing Committee.

About the role

No two weeks at the Squadron are quite the same.

You will be involved across the full range of our sailing and training activities – from administering regular club racing and coordinating volunteers through to supporting major regattas, training programs and special events.

Key responsibilities include:

- Coordinating the Squadron’s racing, regattas, cruising and sailing events

- Managing race entries and associated compliance documentation

- Prepare Notices of Race, Sailing Instructions and other race documentation

- Coordinating results and handicapping processes

- Supporting delivery of the Squadron’s SailTrain training programs

- Coordinating course bookings, instructors and training schedules

- Recruiting, rostering, briefing and supporting race management and sailing volunteers

- Assisting with the organisation and delivery of regattas, series, prize presentations and special events

- Helping ensure Club boats, marks, safety equipment and other sailing assets are maintained and ready for use





- Maintaining sailing and training information across the Squadron’s website, email and social media channels

- Assisting with the promotion of sailing and training activities

- Providing administrative and secretarial support to the Sailing Committee

- Working with the wider Squadron team to increase participation and deliver a outstanding experience for members, competitors and visitors.

About you

First and foremost, you know sailing.

You understand the environment, enjoy being around sailors and boats, and are comfortable working with the mix of members, volunteers, officials, instructors and staff that makes a successful sailing club work.

You will be organised, practical and comfortable taking responsibility for getting things done.

We are looking for someone who brings:

- A sound knowledge of recreational boating and competitive sailing

- Familiarity with the Racing Rules of Sailing and sailing handicapping systems

- Strong organisational and administrative skills with good attention to detail

- The ability to manage competing priorities and work independently

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- The ability to work confidently and positively with volunteers

- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

- Confidence using Microsoft Office, databases and digital communication platforms

- Initiative, flexibility and a practical approach to problem solving

- A professional and approachable manner.

Experience within a yacht club, sailing organisation or marine environment would be highly regarded but not essential

Australian Sailing qualifications such as Race Officer, Equipment Auditor or Dinghy/Keelboat Instructor would also be advantageous. However, we are equally interested in applicants with strong sailing knowledge,



practical experience and the right attitude who are willing to further develop their qualifications.

The successful applicant will require, or be willing to obtain, relevant boating, first aid and marine radio qualifications, together with a National Police Check and Working with Vulnerable People Registration.

Employment: Full-time – 38 hours per week, with reasonable additional hours as required

Award: Registered & Licensed Clubs Award – Level 5
Reports to: Membership & Community Manager

Weekend and out-of-hours work is an inherent part of delivering sailing and major events, so flexibility will be important.
