? Remote, Australia | Eastern states preferred Part time, around half-time. Two or three days, school hours, term time - you tell us what works.

The senior tax seat at a startup accounting firm, at hours that fit around your life. You hold the registration and you sign.

Standard Ledger is an accounting-as-a-service firm for startups and scaleups across Australia and the UK. Founders come here to get their numbers done properly and explained plainly, so the work runs well past compliance. Clients are raising, restructuring and expanding overseas, and the questions coming in reflect that.

More than ten years in, the firm runs on Xero and a connected app stack with a small, senior team and very little process. A dedicated preparation team offshore handles the production work, which keeps the senior people on review and advice.

The role

Standard Ledger's co-founder and tax partner has been based in the UK for two years and is still the final sign-off on every Australian return. That arrangement has run its course, and this role takes it over.

You will review and sign off company and individual returns prepared by the team, roughly a couple of hundred a year. You will be the person clients talk to when they have a real tax question: structuring ahead of a raise, Div 7A, CGT small business concessions, employee share schemes, and how all of it interacts with the R&D; tax incentive. You will lead the offshore preparation team and set the technical standard for the firm.

Over time, the tax practice grows around you. Standard Ledger markets around its specialists rather than expecting them to sell, and the same model already runs for its R&D; expert.

What you'll do

- Review and sign off company and individual tax returns prepared by the team

- Hold the TPB registration that Standard Ledger's tax agent status sits under

- Advise founders directly on structuring, Div 7A, GST, CGT small business concessions and the R&D; interaction

- Lead the offshore preparation team and act as the technical reference point for the firm

- Build a library of Standard Ledger tax positions on what comes up over and over: ESS and ESOP, cap table changes, structuring ahead of a raise

- Take those positions public through content, webinars and client sessions

What we're looking for

- CA or CPA qualified

- Registered Tax Agent with the TPB, or eligible to register. This one is essential, because you are the registration the firm sits under. A lapsed registration during a break is fine if you can re-register

- Solid Australian tax experience across individuals and businesses

- A practice background with real client exposure. Corporate tax on its own will not cover it

- Comfortable giving advice, not only reviewing compliance

- Plain-English with clients and sound judgement about when to call something yourself

What's on offer

- Market rates, pro-rata to your hours, plus superannuation

- Around half-time, arranged however suits you. Two or three set days, school hours, term time

- Fully remote from anywhere in Australia

- A stable base across the year rather than pay that swings with tax season

- Reporting straight to the CEO, with the offshore preparation team reporting to you

- A platform if you want one. The firm builds content and webinars around its specialists, so the positions you develop go out with your name on them

- A career break is not something you need to explain away. Start September or October, with flexibility

? Apply now - the returns won't sign themselves.
