Civil Engineer (Project Engineer)

Subdivisions and Land Development

Brisbane CBD

$120,000 - $130,000 package.

The design engineering has gone well. You are technically sound, you know subdivisions, and you could keep doing it for another ten years without much trouble. That is sort of the issue.

Because when you have been handed coordination work, or a project to run, or a client to deal with directly, you have liked it. More than you expected to. And when you look at where design engineering ends up, you cannot see the version of it you want to be doing at forty. The project side, you can.

If you want the project side to become the whole job

This is a project management role first. You would run subdivision projects for private developers, coordinate the design teams, review drawings rather than produce them, and deal with councils as the approving authority rather than the client. You would sit alongside an experienced project manager in a team carrying more work than two hands can cover.

Why you would not end up back on the tools

Design production that can be systematised is done offshore and checked in-house. The roles kept in Brisbane are the thinking ones: design judgement, client interface, running the job. Nobody is going to hand you a 12D model to build.

Which is why your design background is the qualification rather than the baggage. They do not hire project managers who can run a budget and a programme with no technical grounding underneath. You need to know when a drawing is wrong, when a design will cost money on site, and when a designer is telling you something is fine and it isn't. You already do.

Past this role, team leaders run their patch as their own business, with their own plan, their own targets and a share in what it earns.

The money conversation they actually had

They hired an engineer who interviewed well and could have started him five grand lower. He would probably have taken it. They started him at the top of the range instead, because he was worth it. He performed, and rather than make him wait for the company-wide review, they brought his salary review forward. Exactly as promised at offer.

The stated position is that firms who say they want the best and pay median are kidding themselves, so people tend to land at the top of the benchmark or above it.

What sits behind the number

- Two bonuses a year, a week's pay each, paid on how the business has performed. The last was paid at double.

- A structured pathway into shareholding with dividends, opening at associate level. Roughly a third of the business owns a piece of it, bought with their own money.

- They are open to whatever working structure suits you and the role. Unlimited unpaid leave too, so a real block of time off does not mean resigning to take it.

- Memberships reimbursed, study assistance paid, an active RPEQ pathway, and every RPEQ in the business meeting fortnightly on live technical risk. People joining from competitors name that as the thing they did not expect and would not now give up.

What you would need

- Around five years post-graduate in civil, a grounding in subdivision design, and enough project exposure that coordinating consultants and fronting a developer isn't recent to you.

- RPEQ isn't required, though if you are close to it you are at the top of the band. If you are already a year or three into project engineering and just want to do it somewhere better, that works too.

How to Apply

Send me whatever CV you have, even if it is two years out of date. If that is too much effort, find me on LinkedIn instead. Dan Jones, Anjuna People.
