About GGAC

GGAC is an Aboriginal Community-controlled organisation delivering Primary health, Allied Health, Home and Community Care, Youth and Community Justice, Aboriginal Family services and Early years programs.

Incorporated in 1982, GGAC has continued to grow and adapt to meet the needs of the local Aboriginal community. GGAC relocated to its current location, a purpose-built health facility, in 2007. Since its inception GGAC has been funded to service Aboriginal people residing within the Grampians and Wimmera region of Victoria.

GGAC is proactive in developing innovative and creative programs and services in conjunction with mainstream services, as well as Aboriginal specific agencies. The organisation continually grows and evolves to meet the needs of the local Aboriginal community.

About the Role

To provide culturally appropriate health care for adults and youth that contributes to improvement in substance abuse outcomes of Aboriginal community members, through the provision of intensive case management and direct support to Aboriginal people and families with complex needs, encouraging and raising awareness within the Aboriginal community on how to take positive action to deal with alcohol and other drugs issues, and encouraging access to culturally appropriate alcohol and other drug support services.

Key responsibilities

- Work as a member of the Health Services team to provide assessment, referral and follow up of clients with substance abuse issues





- Work in partnership with Aboriginal Health Workers, Doctors, Nurses and other program workers to ensure the provision of holistic health care to Aboriginal people

- Provide services that operate with a harm minimisation approach, by focusing on reducing the harm to both the individual, community and society from alcohol and drug use

- Provide psycho-social counselling and support services to effect and maintain change in individuals with alcohol and drug use problems

- Assess the consumer's continuing needs in relation to alcohol and drugs

- Develop an individual treatment plan with the consumer which is based on the initial assessment and includes appropriate referrals

- Attend case management meetings as required

- Monitor local Aboriginal health problems and needs, advising the Health Manager and/or qualified staff as required

- Support clients and their families to access appropriate agencies where necessary

- Contribute to development, implementation and evaluation of appropriate health promotion programs

About you

- Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs

- Current Australian Drivers Licence

- Willing to travel within the Region for the purposes of supporting the Community

- Diploma in Community Services (desired)

- Diploma in Counselling (desired)
