About the role
Walker and Sons Farming Trust is seeking an experienced Herd Manager to join our team on a full time basis at our farming operation in Tinamba, VIC 3859. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the overall management, health, welfare and productivity of our livestock herd. This position is crucial to the success of our farming enterprise and requires a strategic approach to herd management, combined with hands-on expertise and a commitment to sustainable farming practices.
Key responsibilities
- Overseeing the day-to-day care, feeding and welfare of all livestock to ensure optimal health and productivity
- Planning and implementing breeding programmes to enhance herd genetics and meet production targets
- Monitoring herd performance metrics, including milk production, weight gain, reproduction rates and health indicators
- Managing veterinary care coordination and working closely with veterinarians to maintain herd health and biosecurity standards
- Recruiting, training and supervising farm staff, ensuring adherence to animal welfare protocols and farm safety standards
- Managing feed sourcing, nutrition planning and pasture management to optimise livestock nutrition
- Maintaining comprehensive records on herd health, breeding, production and expenses
- Implementing and enforcing animal welfare and biosecurity protocols across the operation
- Identifying opportunities for operational improvements and cost efficiencies within herd management
- Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, animal welfare legislation and industry standards
What we're looking for
- Proven experience of 5+ years in herd management or livestock farming operations
- In-depth knowledge of livestock breeds, breeding programmes and genetics
- Robust understanding of animal health, nutrition and welfare standards
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and control operational costs effectively
- Experience with farm management software and record-keeping systems
- Leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a team
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry best practices in animal welfare and biosecurity
- Physical fitness and capability to perform manual work when required
- A commitment to sustainable and ethical farming practices
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Relevant qualifications in agriculture, animal science or farm management are desirable
