About us

The Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) directly supports approximately 800,000 people every year and reaches a further million people through local community-based programs.

Our vision is to empower all people to live fulfilling lives and achieve their potential in inclusive communities. We collaborate with government, non-government and community partners to work with children, adults, families and communities to improve lives and realise potential,

with a focus on breaking, rather than managing, disadvantage.

About the role

The North & West Child Law team provides legal advice and representation to casework staff in the northern and western areas of NSW in respect of child protection investigations and the legal needs of children in Out of Home Care. The team is comprised of 15 legal officers in 11 different locations around the state.

Each Legal Officer is responsible for the independent management of a high volume workload, providing child protection legal advice and settlement of Children’s Court documents within urgent timeframes. Legal Officers are also required to provide advice and representation in respect of the Family Law jurisdiction. All legal officers will undertake legal analysis and provide accurate legal advice on a wide variety of complex issues arising for children and young persons who are under the parental responsibility of the Minister, including but not limited to, Wills and Estates, motor vehicle accidents, Victims Support and international travel.

The grade V ‘senior solicitor’ reports to the Manager, North & West Child Law, and is responsible for providing supervision and mentoring to a number of grade 4 legal officers and administrative staff within the broader team, including some that work from remote locations.  The Senior Solicitor is responsible for managing the Audit & Claims practice area.  This involves an administrative process for the allocation of departmental files to external legal practitioners to obtain legal advice on the identification of potential claims on behalf of children and young persons in the Minister’s care.  Potential claims are then allocated to legal officers to be investigated and pursued as appropriate.

The position holder will be adept at developing and maintaining effective and professional working relationships with a wide and varied client base. The position holder is responsible for developing and ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures within the team area, and for providing input as necessary to the development of policy and legislation.  The Senior Solicitor role involves a high volume, process driven workload, balanced by an interesting and varied legal component and the management of small team of legal and administrative staff.
