The Opportunity

Hunter New England Local Health District is seeking experienced GP VMOs and CMOs to provide Emergency Department coverage at rural and regional hospitals across the district.

You will be the senior decision-maker onsite during your shift, managing a broad range of emergency presentations and stabilising patients for retrieval or admission as needed.

Clinical Environment

You will work across rural and regional Emergency Department settings within Hunter New England LHD, with clinical autonomy, senior responsibility and clear escalation pathways.

- Senior onsite role – work independently with backup from experienced nursing teams and escalation pathways
- Diverse ED caseload – manage trauma, acute medical and paediatric presentations
- Community impact – deliver essential care in hospitals with solid local connections
- Retrieval support – stabilise patients for retrieval, transfer or admission where needed
- Specialist access – use telehealth and specialist consultation to support clinical decision-making

Patient Demographic

You will support a broad rural and regional patient mix, including adults, older patients, families, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, paediatric presentations, trauma, acute medical cases and patients requiring stabilisation, admission, retrieval or transfer.

Key Duties

- Provide GP VMO ED or CMO cover within scope
- Act as the senior onsite decision-maker during rostered shifts
- Assess and manage emergency presentations
- Stabilise patients for admission, retrieval or transfer
- Escalate clinical concerns appropriately




- Work collaboratively with nursing, retrieval and specialist teams

Requirements

- General or Specialist AHPRA Registration
- Recent rural emergency, GP VMO ED or CMO experience
- NSW Working with Children Check and Police Check
- Australian working rights
- Willingness to complete HNELHD onboarding and credentialing
