The Opportunity

Hunter New England LHD is seeking an experienced GP VMO or CMO IC to provide solo Emergency Department coverage in a regional hospital.
You will manage a range of high-acuity presentations, working independently while supported by skilled nursing, retrieval, anaesthetics and gynaecology teams.

These shifts are ideal for confident, self-directed doctors with a strong emergency background who are comfortable working as the senior onsite decision-maker.

Clinical Environment

You will work in a regional Emergency Department setting, providing solo cover across day or night shifts.

- Solo ED coverage – manage the department as the senior onsite doctor during your shift
- High-acuity exposure – assess and stabilise diverse acute and emergency presentations
- Autonomy with support – access nursing, retrieval, anaesthetics and gynaecology support
- Practical facilities – staff amenities, electronic medical records and ample parking available
- High-impact rural work – provide essential emergency care in a regional community setting

Shift Structure

- Day shifts: 08:00 – 20:00
- Night shifts: 20:00 – 08:00
- Onsite presence required for the full shift, excluding designated breaks
- Two mandatory rest days for locums working 7+ consecutive days on-call

Patient Demographic

You will support a broad rural and regional patient mix, including adults, older patients, families, acute medical presentations, trauma, women’s health presentations, high-acuity cases and patients requiring stabilisation, admission, retrieval or transfer.

Key Duties

- Provide solo GP VMO ED or CMO IC cover
- Act as the senior onsite decision-maker during rostered shifts
- Assess and manage acute and high-acuity ED presentations
- Stabilise patients for admission,



retrieval or transfer
- Escalate to retrieval, anaesthetics or specialist teams when required
- Complete clinical documentation and handover

Requirements

- AHPRA General or Specialist Registration
- Prior Emergency Medicine experience in a senior or solo capacity
- NSW Working with Children Check and National Police Check
- Australian working rights
- Willingness to complete onboarding and hospital credentialing
