Westside Support Services is looking for experienced Disability Support Workers to support an active young person in Werribee with complex disability and high support needs.

We are looking for someone who is calm, confident, trauma-informed, active, genuinely enjoys working with young people and loves animals.

A little about him

He is an energetic and social young person who loves music and singing, being outdoors, riding his bike, jumping on the trampoline, kicking a soccer ball and sensory activities. He is also really interested in learning the drums and guitar.

He is largely non-verbal and communicates through vocalisations, gestures, some verbal communication and his AAC device (Proloquo2Go).

Finding workers who can genuinely connect with him and use his interests to support his communication, regulation and independence is really key.

Animals are also a big part of his home workplace, with dogs, cats, a bunny and a lorikeet. Workers must be comfortable around animals, have no relevant allergies, and be confident supporting safe interactions between him and the family pets. Workers may also be asked to walk the dogs as part of the role.

The role

Supports include 1:1, 2:1 and overnight shifts at home and in the community.

This is an active and complex support role. At times he can experience significant dysregulation and behaviours of concern, including physical aggression, self-injury, property damage, absconding and complex personal and social boundary behaviours.

Workers need to be experienced and confident with complex behaviours and able to remain calm and consistent when things become challenging.

The role includes:

- Supporting him at home and in the community

- Supporting communication using AAC and other strategies

- Supporting emotional and sensory regulation

- Building independence and daily living skills

- Engaging him in music, sport, outdoor and sensory activities





- Recognising early signs of dysregulation and responding proactively

- Following his Behaviour Support Plan and Positive Behaviour Support strategies

- Maintaining clear and consistent professional boundaries

- Completing shift notes, incident reports and behaviour documentation

- Working with his family and broader support team

What we’re looking for

Ideally you will have:

- Experience with complex/high-intensity behaviours of concern

- Experience supporting Autistic people and/or people with intellectual disability

- A trauma-informed approach

- Good de-escalation skills

- Confidence around safety and professional boundaries

- Patience, reliability and the ability to stay calm under pressure

- Good communication and documentation skills

- A willingness to learn and follow participant-specific strategies consistently

- A genuine love of animals and confidence around dogs, cats and other household pets

- Lived experience is highly desirable

An interest in music, singing, instruments, sport or outdoor activities would be a huge bonus.

Requirements

- Certificate III or IV in Individual Support, Disability, Mental Health, Community Services or similar

- Current First Aid & CPR

- NDIS Worker Screening Check

- Working With Children Check

- Valid Driver’s Licence

Experience with Positive Behaviour Support, AAC, restrictive practices, medication administration or crisis intervention would also be highly regarded.

Participant-specific behaviour support and medication training will be provided.

Hours

There are a range of weekday, before-school, after-school, weekend, school holiday and overnight shifts available, including 1:1 and 2:1 supports.

There may also be additional shifts available with other Westside participants across Melbourne’s western suburbs.
