About the role

Strong Spirit Services Ltd is seeking a dedicated Aboriginal Project Officer, Cancer Care Navigation to join our team in Port Macquarie, NSW. This is a full-time position that plays a crucial role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in accessing and navigating cancer care services. You will be instrumental in bridging cultural gaps between healthcare providers and Aboriginal patients, ensuring that cancer care is delivered in a culturally safe and appropriate manner. This role is essential to our mission of improving health outcomes and reducing cancer-related disparities within Indigenous communities.

Key responsibilities

- Provide culturally sensitive cancer care navigation support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families throughout their cancer journey

- Establish and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal community members, healthcare providers, and local organisations to facilitate effective communication and care coordination

- Deliver health education, programs and cancer awareness information to community members in culturally appropriate ways

- Assist patients in accessing treatment options, appointments, and support services, whilst addressing practical barriers such as transport

- Advocate for patients' rights and ensure their voices are heard within the healthcare system

- Collect and report on project data to monitor outcomes and inform service improvements

- Participate in community engagement activities and events to raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection

- Collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure Aboriginal patients receive holistic, coordinated care





- Identify and respond to gaps in service provision and contribute to the development of culturally appropriate resources

What we're looking for

- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background, with a strong connection to community

- Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal health issues, cultural protocols, and the social determinants of health affecting Indigenous communities

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups including patients, families, healthcare professionals, and community organisations

- Experience in community health, social services, or a related field

- Knowledge of cancer services, health navigation, or patient support (desirable but not essential)

- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities

- Proficiency with computer systems and data management

- A commitment to cultural safety and a non-judgmental approach to service delivery

- Current driver's licence and access to reliable transport

- Relevant qualifications or certifications in health, community services, or a related discipline are advantageous
