Accounting Assistant – University Student | Career Progression
$35 per hour + super | Casual | 2–3 full days per week | Optional Saturdays | Knoxfield Australian Gold Capital is seeking an ambitious university student currently studying Accounting, or Commerce with an Accounting major, to join our accounts team while completing their degree.
Australian Gold Capital operates a growing national network of precious metals and bullion businesses across Australia. As the business continues to expand, we are looking to develop the next generation of our accounts team from within.
This is an opportunity to gain genuine commercial accounting experience while studying, with significant potential for career progression after graduation.
For a high-performing candidate, our intention is to provide increasing accounting responsibility as their skills develop, with the opportunity to transition into a full-time accounting role following graduation and a longer-term pathway towards positions such as Company Accountant or Financial Controller.
The Role
You will work alongside our existing accounts team and gain practical exposure to the day-to-day financial operations of a multi-location Australian business. Your initial responsibilities will include:
- Bank and account reconciliations
- Matching payments, invoices and transactions
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable support
- Checking daily transactions and store reconciliations
- Data entry and maintenance of accounting records
- Investigating and resolving discrepancies
- Assisting with preparation of reports and supporting documentation
- Working with Reckon accounting software and internal business systems
- General accounts and financial administration
- Supporting the broader accounts team as required
As your skills and understanding of the business develop,
there will be opportunities to take on more complex accounting responsibilities.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone interested in building a career in accounting, not simply filling a casual position. Ideally, you will:
- Be currently studying Accounting, or Commerce with an Accounting major
- Have solid numerical and analytical skills
- Have excellent attention to detail
- Be comfortable working with Excel
- Be organised and methodical
- Be able to follow established procedures accurately
- Take initiative when investigating discrepancies
- Be reliable and able to commit to regular full working days each week
- Have an interest in developing your commercial accounting skills
Experience with Reckon or other accounting software is advantageous but not essential — training will be provided. Previous accounting or bookkeeping experience is helpful but not essential. We are prepared to train someone with the right attitude, aptitude and attention to detail.
Hours & Flexibility
The position requires availability for approximately 2–3 full working days per week. We can provide flexibility around university timetables as to which days are worked, however applicants must be available for full-day shifts rather than shorter hours between classes.
Optional Saturday work is also available.
This structure is designed to allow you to gain meaningful commercial accounting experience while continuing your university studies.
Career Development
We believe in developing capable people from within the business. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to progressively learn more of the company's accounting and financial operations rather than remaining limited to basic administrative tasks.
For a high-performing candidate, the potential career pathway could include:
Accounts Assistant → Graduate/Assistant Accountant → Company Accountant → Financial Controller
Progression will depend on performance, capability, qualifications and the needs of the business, but we are specifically interested in finding someone with the ambition to develop into a more senior accounting position over time.
What We Offer
- $35 per hour + super
- Approximately 2–3 full days per week
- Optional Saturday work available
- Flexibility around university commitments as to which full days are worked
- Genuine commercial accounting experience while completing your degree
- Exposure to the financial operations of a growing multi-location business
- Training and support from an experienced accounts team
- Increasing responsibility as your capabilities develop
- Potential transition to a full-time accounting role following graduation
- Long-term career progression, including potential Company Accountant and Financial Controller opportunities
This is not an internship or unpaid placement. You will be a paid member of the accounts team with genuine responsibilities from the beginning. We are looking for someone who wants to learn the business, develop professionally and potentially build a long-term career with us.
Location: Knoxfield, Victoria To apply, please submit your resume together with a short introduction outlining your current course, year of study, expected graduation date and availability.
