$1,116.30 per week plus superannuation

The Opportunity
Are you a 3rd or 4th year Civil or Structural Engineering student at the University of Wollongong looking to complete your compulsory university placement and gain real-world engineering experience?
Join Wollongong City Council as a Civil Engineering Intern , and work alongside experienced engineers on projects that help shape the future of our city. From major infrastructure and project delivery to civil design, structural engineering and geotechnical investigations, you'll gain practical experience within the exciting world of local government infrastructure. You'll also take the lead on a dedicated project, giving you the chance to apply your skills and make a real impact.

The Details Anticipated commencement: Monday, 30 November 2026
Contract Type: 12-week full-time term contract completing Friday 26 February 2027
Contract Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: 41 Burelli Street, Wollongong
Salary: $1,116.30 per week + superannuation
About the Internship
At Wollongong City Council, our engineers help deliver and maintain infrastructure that connects communities and supports over 200,000 residents across the region. From Helensburgh to Windang, and Dapto to the coast, we manage a huge range of public infrastructure worth around $4 billion. That includes roads, bridges, stormwater systems, sports fields, pools, libraries, community centres, and more.
This opportunity is open to students in their final or penultimate year of Civil Engineering at the University of Wollongong.
During your internship you'll:
- Work alongside engineers and project professionals across a range of engineering disciplines
- Contribute to real infrastructure projects and operational activities
- Apply engineering concepts learned at university in practical environments
- Develop skills in project delivery, design, analysis, stakeholder engagement and technical reporting
- Gain valuable insight into engineering careers within local government
Whether your interests lie in major projects, civil design, structures, geotechnical engineering or infrastructure planning, this internship will provide valuable exposure to the profession and help inform your future career pathway. You'll be employed on a full-time basis (35/hours per week) for 12 weeks starting in November 2026. We'll work with you to set start and finish dates that suit your schedule!
Your employment will be in accordance with Council's Enterprise Agreement including a break over the Christmas/New Year period and based at our office in Wollongong CBD.
