A rare opportunity: build and lead the commercial function of Tasmania's next major wind business
Westcoast Renewable Energy (WRE) is looking for a Commercial Director to lead its commercial function across the business, and across the development and operations lifecycle. This is WRE’s first commercial hire, with a mandate to build the function, lead it, and take its flagship Whaleback Ridge Wind Farm to Final Investment Decision (FID) and financial close, and build the commercial platform for the pipeline beyond.
WRE is a Tasmanian-owned company developing large-scale wind. The West Coast of Tasmania holds one of the world's highest-quality wind resources—ranked in the top 1-2% globally—and Whaleback Ridge is how we're putting it to work: a multi-gigawatt staged development declared a Major Project by the Tasmanian Government. We are a small team doing work that matters, guided by simple values: respect for place, practical thinking, and shared benefits.
About the role The Commercial Director will have a mandate to build. WRE is deliberately creating its commercial function ahead of FID, because the quality of the deals struck over the next two years will shape the enterprise for decades. This role will create that function and lead it. Their task is clear: convert WRE's multi-gigawatt pipeline into contracted, bankable revenue, then secure the capital to build it and lead the commercial function across construction and long-term operation.
The timing is rare. The recently approved Marinus Link—a new undersea power cable connecting Tasmania to the mainland grid—will open a direct export path from Tasmania's world-class wind to Victoria. Demand for firmed, verifiably renewable energy is growing fast.
WRE has spent four years on environmental studies to refine the project to a genuinely low-impact footprint, and the pipeline extends to around 2.8 GW across staged development. What's needed now is the commercial engine to fund it, contract it and grow it.
Your work will span
- Route to market and offtake: Setting WRE's route-to-market strategy across corporate and C&I; PPAs,
utility and government-scheme contracts, and merchant exposure; leading origination, structuring and negotiation of offtake and firming arrangements.
- Capital and project finance: Owning the debt and equity structure and the path through financial close and beyond; leading day-to-day relationships with capital partners, debt providers, equity investors and infrastructure funds; owning the integrated financial case as the single source of commercial truth.
- Deal origination, M&A; and strategic partnerships: Originating, structuring and negotiating strategic deals that move WRE up the value chain, including large-load offtake, joint ventures and asset acquisitions; bringing rigour to build/sell/partner decisions.
- Commercial leadership: Building and leading a new commercial and origination function; contributing to enterprise strategy as a member of the executive leadership team; setting delegations, deal-approval gates and commercial risk controls.
- Land, connection and major contracts: Owning the commercial terms of landowner leases and access, grid connection agreements, and major procurement including turbine supply, balance of plant and EPC contracts.
You will report directly to the CEO and join the executive leadership team as a peer to the Project Director, Technical Director and Chief Operating Officer. You will build and lead a new commercial and origination team. This is a genuinely rare seat: the first commercial hire in an ambitious Tasmanian-owned company at the moment the pathway to market is opening.
About you
You are a proven dealmaker. Sector experience in energy, infrastructure or resources is valued, but not required—we are equally interested in senior commercial leaders from private equity,
corporate finance or M&A; legal practice who will bring deal instinct into renewable energy.
- Approximately 12–15 years or more of senior commercial, origination, investment or corporate development experience, including accountability for material deals.
- A demonstrated track record of originating, structuring and closing complex, long-term commercial deals with sophisticated counterparties.
- Genuine project finance depth: has raised and structured debt and equity, taken projects through financial close, and is fluent in financial modelling and bankability.
- Corporate development and M&A; experience, including portfolio growth and asset acquisition.
- Experience building and leading high-performing commercial teams.
- A degree in finance, economics, engineering, law or a related discipline. A postgraduate qualification such as an MBA or CFA is valued.
- Australian citizenship or permanent residency is required for this position.
You bring commercial rigour, probity and the judgement to know when a deal is not good enough. You are strategic and entrepreneurial, yet disciplined on risk. You care about climate change and the role of renewables in the energy transition. And you are ready to commit to Tasmania—to WRE's values, to living in Devonport, and to helping build the state's economic future.
