About the role

As a Senior Management Accountant, you will play a pivotal role in driving the department's annual budget process and strengthening financial management practices across multiple divisions.

You'll lead the development and execution of a consistent, top-down budgeting approach - ensuring alignment with the broader finance strategy while enabling divisions to deliver on their financial commitments.

Working closely with Finance and business partnering teams, you will provide strategic oversight, embed governance frameworks, and identify opportunities to uplift financial performance and capability.

About you

You are a strategic and solutions-focused finance professional with strong management accounting expertise and the ability to navigate complexity with confidence.

You bring:

- Proven experience in budgeting, financial planning and management accounting
- Strong understanding of financial governance, controls and frameworks
- Ability to interpret complex financial information and provide clear, strategic advice
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working across diverse teams
- A proactive mindset, with the ability to identify issues and drive continuous improvement
- Resilience and adaptability to manage competing priorities in a high-pressure environment
- Strong analytical capability, with the ability to use data analysis to identify issues and provide meaningful insights that support informed decision-making
- Strong Excel and systems skills,



who can confidently navigate financial models and systems to analyse and interpret information efficiently. Experience using SAP and Prime would be highly regarded, but is not essential.

Key knowledge and experience

- Substantial experience setting management accounting governance and controls, and working with stakeholders to operationalise and implement
- Substantial experience with management accounting and reporting risk identification and providing financial analysis and insights
- Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department's Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department's Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Essential requirements of the role

- Degree in accounting or finance discipline and membership of a recognised Australian professional accounting association
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.

Renewal is not required after the WWCC expires, as long as you remain in a non-child-related role. Employer obligations only apply while the WWCC is valid.

Candidates must have Australian work rights (citizens, permanent residents, Recent Zealand citizens or a valid work visa). Ongoing (permanent) roles are open to Australian citizens and permanent residents and New Zealand citizens, while temporary roles welcome applicants with a visa.
